....If a colleague said that he would like a high res copy of one of your photos so that he can print it and put it on his wall, and assuming you were not interested in any payment, would you do anything to protect your image from being freely circulated or just hand over a jpeg and be done with it?

i'd hypothetically tell them to naff off or do what TerryT said.

Personally I would offer to get it printed and also make some money from it, you are the one who has all the equipment and have outlaid for it. The trouble is once you give one image away, people will always ask you as "A Favour" could you do this and do that, I know I did a friend a favour and I get it all the time now. I had one person ask me for some PR Shots and when I quoted they never got back to me and I found out later that they had some taken with a P&S and wondered why they werent any good for what they wanted.

Depends on the friend and how much I trust them I guess. I'd likely go with Terry's idea and print it off myself though, maybe recouping the cost from the friend depending on how big they wanted it done.

Thanks all. I think I favour the printing it myself idea. I would recover my costs only. I do not wish to charge anything in addition. I do take the point about setting a precedent by not paying but this was not a picture I was asked to take just one that he happened to notice on my wallpaper. If I were asked to shoot something specific, I may think differently.

Erm, hypothetically speaking.

I would just let them have it, only my hobby and personally don't see it being any different to giving them anything else.

Bit like burning them a CD, still got the original and pleased they liked it that much to mention it

Don't see everything with pound signs flashing before my eyes, get enjoyment from giving and no doubt had my fun taking it in the first place

Depends on how well you know the friend, but be wary it could be thin end of the wedge, so maybe best all round to print it at a pro lab yourself.

This was my exact thinking. The only thing I did want to prevent is anybody else making any money from it, not necessarily my colleague but maybe he'll give the file to someone else who'll give it to somebody else... I don't personally think that picture is good enough for that to happen but maybe it applies to others.

Like you, I took the picture for fun, and I liked it enough to use it as my PC wall paper. I'm chuffed that somebody else likes it enough to hang it on their wall, couldn't give a stuff about making a couple of quid out of it.

Daresay if anyone did it wouldn't exactly be a life changing amount and what iv'e never had iv'e never missed.

Entirely different if it was my livelihood, but it isn't and never likely to be either

Show us the pic then :)

I'm lucky in the sense that most of my mates are close friends that have a trade that is useful to me at some point, so i take photos for them at no cost and pop them onto cd in Jpeg and if my car goes wrong they fix it or if i need work done in my bathroom it's done all at no cost, just blown my engine up in my focus, bloke who i have just done nearly 100 shots for of his newborn is a mechanic so he's fitting the new engine and getting it running again for me, Sorted saved my £100's in garage fees, he's happy, i'm happy and you never know he might show someone the photos who then would like some done at a cost of course

remember there is a difference between a collegue and a friend.with very close friends i have always either given a cd of low res or given 6" x 4" prints which can be had for as low as 3p each.my friends know i have invested heavily in my equipment and know that i need to cover costs, many of my friends offer something i need or will find useful in exchange for anything i do for them that will have value or overhead costs, which is fair

collegues are not close friends.one day collegue next day not.i have had my trust abused several times in the past,so i lay down my own rules for anything photography related

charge him a fair rate for your time and overhead expenses for an image that you will have printed.....thats my advise

Also depends what the photo is, if its a photo of one my colleagues goofing around then I would give him the file. If its something that can be sold on, eg still life, landscape etc, then I would print it for him.

I wouldn't offer to print it for him Unless I could do it on my own printer. What would you do with the print if he says he doesn't like it?

My Brother in law asked for one of my photos at 40x30 inch!

I got it printed and charged him £20. I think it cost me £14.99 to print it, so I made a 5er and he got the print he wanted.

Its on his kitchen wall and a talking point of the room, if anyone asks, he tells them its mine which may one day result in a another order. I certainly wouldn't just give the digital file to anyone.

Cheers all, some good advice for me to wade through. Haven't quite decided what to do but either way I'd like him to have a copy one way or anther. It's nice to feel appreciated!

I'd run with this approach. I just wouldn't ask good friends to pay for something that I enjoy doing and don't do for a living.

I've done a few pics for friends, and while I am in no way a pro photographer I take pride in what I do. My friends can have photos of them, their events, their home etc and I would never charge them for them. If they are photos that I don't think I need to keep exclusive - which are most of them - then I wouldn't mind them having them digitally.

It really depends on what attachment you have to your photo, and what you think is likely to happen if you hand over a digital file.

If you have asked the question, you must think that there is a chance that your pic will go off digitally somewhere, so the ideal answer is to print one for them then hope they like the large scale version! ;)

Thanks all. I'm sorting out a print today. Just need to agree sizing.

Make sure it's got your name printed in one of the bottom corners, not too obvious, but clear enough so that anyone looking closely will see it - just the same as artists sign their paintings. It's an excellent image and it's worth advertising the fact that it's your work!

Some of my friends have a landscape or 2 of mine on their walls and they have paid for them. They have all been professionally printed and framed but I only charge them a bit of beer money over what it costs me even though most have offered to pay the going rate. However, work colleagues, get charged a bit more.

Up to A3, I would print it myself and give it to him - any bigger and I would get it printed and show him the bill so he could repay me the cost.

i have been approached by few of my very close friends asking for one of my pictures, either printed or in jpeg, so they could print it themselves. I absolutely had no problems with it as 1)they are my close friends 2)i enjoy giving away my work, if someone like it enough to ask for it, that's enough payment for me :).

Being lucky enough to have a good friend in the printing company, i treated them with an extra A0 canvas print of the picture! They all absolutely loved it. Now my work is proudly displayed in their houses and work places.
