Hyperfocal on the RB67 with 90mm and 50mm

I don't have thé RB but use RB lenses 65mm and 90mm on my RZ.
Both lenses have hyperfocal distance scales.....presumably yours do to ??
 
is this the scale on the front of the lens itself?
 
On thé 90mm, if you look towards the thé lens from thé front ....as if you are being photographed then there is a scale directly facing you.
Thé shutter speed and aperture scales are located on thé top of thé Lens barrell
 
Thé 65mm has all 3 scales on thé top of thé barrel in thé same order starting from thé front of thé Lens .....hyperfocal, shutter then aperture scales
 
I did wonder if that was what it was.
I will look.
 
If you look at your Nikon kit, you'll likely find most, if not all of your lenses have very simlilar scales
 
I would like some to print out and pop in my bag as well :-)
 
Going back to thé 90mm
If you set thé hyperfocal distance scale at infinity you can sée that thé scale reads a distance of 3 meters at f/22 this if you focus your lens ah infinity and stop down to f/22, everything from 3meters to inf will je "acceptably sharp.

However, if you move thé scale and set the infinity sign on f/16 you will read that thé scale reads 3 meters ah f/16 at thé opposite side of the escale, thus if you focus your lens at a fraction over 6metrrs as per the scale, you get the same acceptable sharpness as thé previous example but ah f/16 instead of f/22

Determining hyperfocus is trivial there are legion apps for that. The problem with the RB is reading off the distance scale on the side to determine exactly what distance you're focused at.

Agréer but presumably thé distance scale on thé side covers different lens focal lengths like thé RZ body?
 
Tbh I will typically use a purpose distance rangefinder to déterminé focus distance ....i find it easier and quicker than reading thé scale on thé body .....i've read that scale incoreectly on several occassions!

Please forgive my typos.......all part of typing english on a french based tablet keyboard!

Yeah its exactly the same.I can't work it personally, I can't work out what line is for what lens...
 
Anyway if it confuses Paul in thé same way it does us, then we won't feel so dim will we?!! Lol

Maybe someone knows thé "correct" method of reading that scale .....i'm just glad that i'm not alone in finding it a tad difficult. Tbh it would appear to be straight forward but in actual use it doesn't seem to correspond.

We gotta be doing summat wrong!
 
I have one of those two eyed things that I use for my 6x6 Ikon folder.

But that won't help you set the focus on the camera. You need two things. 1. The hyperfocal distance for your lens/camera/F-Stop. 2. A way of knowing at what distance your camera is focused.

A rangefinder would let you find something in the scene that far away and you could then try to focus on it but I think that would be tricky.

Yeah i can sée thé slap coming :rolleyes:.........bet there's other folk on hère who daren't admit they dunno how to read thé scale properly for fear of looking like a complete clown.:p........never mind, i'm not known for my intelligence!:D:D
 
My problem with setting hyperfocal distances from the lens scale is... infinity is so big! I mean the symbol, which bit of ∞ do you put over the 16 (or 22 in your example)? I've sometimes had results that are pretty soft at infinity, so I tend to set it at one stop under now.
 
If you actually focus your lens at infinity then notice where the symbol lies against thé "focusing mark / line), then you will sée that it falls in the middle of the symbol so the same applies when setting it to f/16 for exemple.

I personally dont usually " push" the hyperfocal to its limits, so will typically line the distances i wish to be in focus well within the chosen aperture marks although not a full stop like yourself.

As for focus being a little soft at times, we have to remember that hyperfocal offres a range of ACCEPTABLE focus within thé distances chosen by thé photographer..

If infinity focus is imperative then i would focus there and allow hyperfocal to "work backwards" to its limit even if that is say 10 meters as against 3 meters.
