Hunter shoots neighbour he thought was a deer

It's in America, things like that are so common, I don't really see the need for a thread about it

they love their guns those yanks

It is a tragedy but I'm a bit confused. I too was surprised at the range and the weapon. Is it normal to hunt deer with a hand gun?

Dave

No but apparently he claims it's legal to hunt with a handgun after dark when it would be illegal to do so with a rifle.

It takes a halfway decent shot with a high powered rifle to deliver a humane shot to a deer at 200 yards, no responsible person would think it OK to try it with a handgun - only in America :(

I call BS, purely based on a gut feeling, nothing of any substance.
Though people do hunt in USA with single shot pistols (and rifles) and claim considerable accuracy due to fewer moving parts and so on compared with revolvers etc. Thompson are the main supplier I think:

You’ll see that the pistol parts are interchangeable with the rifles.
However, I am not defending this idiot who is obviously an idiot if it happened as described.

Granted, the only article I've read is the linked one, but that's not claimed in there.

Saw it on the news app yesterday but it's dropped off the page now. Sorry, can't remember the source beyond that.

who cares, yanks, guns, b******t, man shot, the end/

Is how I first read it, but the shooting was 40 minutes after sunset and its a violation of state laws forbidding hunting in the dark.

What got me was that with all the talk about assault rifles, gun controls, the americans love of owning and using guns, that this was classed as a pistol that could be accurate to that distance.
The pistol was a high-powered, single shot handgun often used for deer hunting, said Sheriff Joe Gerace.

A tragedy.
Yet 200 yds with a pistol/handgun?

I agree, that is almost unheard of for a pistol.
The ISSF long distance for pistol is 50 metres.
There are so many reasons why a pistol should not be used for hunting any animal, particularly at a distance of over 50 metres. The primary one IMO, is accuracy, which means that you may leave an animal in a wounded state.
The Americans are just bonkers, and I think most of their decisions regarding guns are based on - "how cool would it be to do that/own that/shoot that".

Woman shot.
At least try to keep up.

Some Metallic Silhouette handgun events include (steel) rams at 200 yards/metres. It's quite feasible, but this is a target game and I fully agree that it's unacceptable to shoot at living animals at anything more than about 50m. The handgun (single shot, and really a short rifle; or powerful revolver) and shooter skill come into it too, and you never take the shot if you can't see clearly for any reason.

Who cares man woman yank gun shoot kill done for

Treat yourself to using a few more syllables; perhaps a little sentence structure. :D
