Hi has anyone on here done any photography courses at Hull College? I am looking into doing an evening course there starting in January. Going to start with the 5 week introduction course. Just wondering what to expect from it really.

Cheers.

Call them and ask! They should put you in touch with the tutor, who should be willing to give you an outline.

Hi Mark,

I will be starting work in Hull College's photography dept in December and will be taking some evening classes in January. What sort of level do you think you're at? It may be that you might get more from a different course

What are you taking evening classes in?

Not sure yet, as I've not started. But I suspect things like the introduction courses. They're also interested in creating entirely new evening classes and I've been asked to come up with suggestions. So if there's anything you want in particular... ;)

Ahh.. you mean you will be running classes.. not taking them. I thought for a minute... why re Hull college employing people who need to go on evening courses? :)

I looked into doing the Level 3 Btec at Park Street after finishing my level 2 City and Guilds but found that it was very arty. Was looking for something more practical - learning to use studio etc. East Riding Adult Ed have cancelled all of their level 3 courses and I know that there are a few people out there who would have liked to continue and expand their learning - just a thought. Sarah

Thanks Sarah, I will pass that on to the Head of School. Part of the reason they hired me is because I've been working in the press for the last 7 years, so practicality is my focus to use a poor pun.

On learning to use studio they do have a studio set up in Park Street, in fact there's at least three separate areas so there's no reason why you can't be taught studio stuff. And once you know how to use a studio I would hope students would progress to use remote flash on location in the same manner which is a great skill to have.

Hi looking at starting with the 5 week introduction course starting in Jan so everything will be on a 'level playing field' so to speak.

I'm only self taught so would like to know I'm doing things right before progressing to the intermediate class.

Sounds good, I've been told it is at an absolute beginner level but I'll dig out some more info if you like

Yes please. Would you recommend starting with the intermediate level then? If its a case of 'push the button down half way to focus' etc. maybe better off? But if its correct composition etc then thats good.

i always wanted to give these courses a go only live 10 min walk but my main issue is i have a very bad memory i can go over something 20 times on paper and forget it but get shown it and i tend to better at remembering it

would love to have a go and do a course (intorduction would not be for me i dont think )

i think if i remember when i enquired it was this button does this and this button does that this is a programme that manipulate's the photo and that was pretty much it

the next level was composition , exposure , ligting (studio i think ) learning more to do with stuff like diffrent depth of field et
a friend did it but said it as hard but very enjoyable and i belive it is a years course so wont start till new school year i dont think

The introduction is a 5 week course. The intermediate is a 10 week both starting in January and again in April. Just got my first Canon DSLR. Maybe better with the inter. 10 weeker then.

For me there is only one way to learn about photography and that is to do it! If a class descends into a lecture then little learning is really done. Whoever teaches the class will tie it to practical work with a bit of critique.

If you know how the shutter and aperture relate to each other and a bit about their different effects then I'd go for the intermediate personally, as I've been told the beginner course is for an absolute novice.

And if it's a bit difficult, personally I prefer that as it gives you something to aim for, and helps motivate you. But I will drop a line and ask for a bit more detail and get back to you all ASAP.

Can you tell I'm excited about my new job? :)

Many thanks much appreciated, looking like the intermediate one for me.

Yes :)

Do you mind if I ask what happened to your old job? Working as a press photographer? It may relate to another thread on changing media.

Yeah, I quit!

I've been working up in Scotland and I've wanted to move to that area of Yorkshire for family reasons for a while. They aren't replacing me initially apparently but it wouldn't surprise me if they eventually did

I should also say I've wanted to go into the teaching aspect too, broaden your skills and all that

Hi Sarah,

I spoke to the head of School and she said that their Btec Level 3 is "a bit of a mix and quite 'ideas' led", so students do tend to gravitate towards the artier end of the spectrum. However *if* there is enough interest they would consider offering alternatives within the Btec, and I've suggested a neat solution to that so I think you will be able to get what you want from the course, perhaps if you register an interest by ringing the college and say what you are looking for that can help. Or you could just PM me and I'll pass it on.

I'll get some firmer details on that and also the difference between the introducing/intermediate courses for the other posters on this thread later in the week.

Cheers!

Dan

Great thanks. I'm in Coventry this week at the Jaguar Academy. Will be enrolling on the 3rd when I get back home to Hull.

Excellent! The Head of School is firming up the actual details with the Photography head this week but I daresay that you'll find out all you need to know when you enrol.
