Now there's sanity in the White House, will Huawei and Google be allowed to play nicely again?

Not sure Hauwei will want to, they’ve developed their own operating system now, which is surely better for them than using android.
Other aspects of their business might benefit from it, such as google services, but I’d be surprised if they went back to an android OS.

I agree with sanity in the Whitehouse, it all remains to be seen if the US starts playing nicely with lots of organizations.

This. And it's not the first time the US have shot themselves in the foot this way, they previously banned the sale of high-end CPUs to China so the Chinese produced their own. What the west seems to forget is that China is a communist state, if they want to produce something they will, they won't hang around wringing their hands about investment capital, profits and markets. If the choice is do it now or 20 years in a re-education camp, people tend to be quite motivated to get the job done.

I suspect they may offer dual lines.

Huawei wants to sell a lot of phones in the west, and buyers in a highly competitive market want Google services. If things now return to normal, I'd fully expect Huawei to start offering the Google stuff again.

That was my thought too. Yes, Huawei have developed their own OS but how many dedicated apps are there for it (or is it compatible enough with Android for Android apps to work within it?)

There are some who would prefer their phones to only send data to one surveillance organisation, rather than 2, so Huawei running non-google will certainly be favoured by some, particularly among the IT community.

With my Russian browser, Israeli firewall, UK Covid app and Google services running on a Chinese phone, I must be providing data to at least 5 intelligence agencies. The battery seems to be running down very quickly since I searched for Plutonium Novichok Anthrax Inauguration Drone yesterday morning.

Oh, you get that too? ;)

I'm not *that* paranoid, but I have come across a number of comments on The Register made by people claiming to prefer an un-googled phone.

I use my phone as a phone and very rarely as much else - never in any financial way. I'm fully aware that they (ALL phones) are tracking devices and are probably more hackable than computers. TBH, if I didn't need a bank account to move money through, I'd deal purely in cash whenever possible - I don't trust banks any more than I trust conputers! Unfortunately, these days, 'puters, phones and banks are necessary evils; life used to be far simpler!
