Ok, after having my HTC phone for a few weeks, I've realised that HTC Sync isn't very good (especially when loading music). Now I've always been led to believe that you can just drag & drop files straight to the phone without having to use any software. This also leads me to believe that, when I plug the USB cable into the Mac, it should appear as an external drive in Finder.

It doesn't. What am I doing wrong?
 
A pal of mine had the same problem until he found THIS - problem solved.

Hmm, it's a strange one. Tried it in 3 different ports. Showed as connected in all 3 and showed in HTC Sync but was only picked up by the app in the 3rd.
 
Is the the bit that where I say ditch the mac? :p

I've got an HTC and every time I connect it, it wants to do stuff that I don't want it to,
the damned things alive!

Can't help TBH but I know that its hyper-active when connected to a PC, I can't see there being any difference?

The phrase 'they are complete b*st*rds' springs to mind when it comes to USB connections. Oddly, my HTC Desire was always pretty well behaved with the Macbook, and even the Motorola RAZRi played OK.
 
I don't understand the comments made here. My htc desire hd of old and current Google nexus 7 have no issue connecting to any of my macs or Linux or windows machines.

You have enabled it in the device to show up as a disk haven't you?

Not sure, can't see where to do it.
 
Did you try the first one as well? And what about the link when you still have issues? I really think the issue is with the android device.

Whether it is new or not is irrelevant. USB mass storage needs to be enabled. Iirc USB debugging Is useful for when you want to use the command line to control your android device but not necessarily to enable USB mass storage.

Another thought, what is your external storage formatted as on the Android?
 
Now I'm confused. The link you posted is titled "How to enable USB Mass Storage" and goes on to give instructions on how to check "USB Debugging". So how do you enable USB Mass Storage then?

Which HTC phone are we talking about? Looking at this thread, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2208417 the HTC One doesn't seem to be able to do this. Odd but as what I expected that it is the device.

You can check in the system profiler whether OS X "sees" the USB devices by looking under hardware/USB.

Alternatively you can install lsusb through the brew package manager.
 
In that case you may as well give up. Do a Google search for the htc one m8 as what I've found quickly suggests that phone doesn't support USB mass storage mode.

System Profiler can be found under the apple symbol, top left, about this Mac and more information. Alternatively you can run it from the command line.

The brew package manager is just that. Do a google to learn how to install it, it will provide access to many standard Linux tools.

However I think it is all fitful when the phone just doesn't support you gaining access like that. As I said before, nothing to do with the Mac.
 
If you google for mtp which the only protocol the htc one m8 supports you can see how limited that is. Here is one example of a product for OS X that attempts to replicate the effect of a mass storage driver.

By far the easiest work around would be to just take the memory card out and pop it in your Mac.
 
Can you browse the phone via Bluetooth? If you switch Bluetooth on the Mac and the phone you may be able to get at it that way. I used to do that with my Nokia when the usb mass storage became unreliable.

Are there any apps which let you have the internal phone memory browsable over wifi like a network drive?

I can but it will only let me transfer data from phone to Mac, I can't transfer data the other way so `I'm unable to put music onto the phone.

The Mac is coming up to 6 years old but it's running Yosemite. That said, it looks like I picked the one Android phone that doesn't support USB Mass Storage. :rolleyes:

When you say 'not very good' - will it actually do the job even if its a painful experience? I never did get my HTC to work with the macs a few years ago, but didn't try hat hard either. The Samsungs we have now also have a synch thing, which a bit like Apple crap, I stay well away from, I can back up between phone and Macs quite easily without all that rubbish.
 
I was just thinking of the Doubletwist utility that I used to use with my Android devices, but it clearly highlights in it as well that that functionality was removed from recent Android models...

Makes you a bit stuffed unfortunately, so much for open Android hey ;)

Looking at that link, doubletwist have made a utility that you can install on your HTC One M8 called Airsync. When that is running you should be able to access it and get your stuff across.

It does the job but I really wanted to get away from the iTunes type thing and, with people always telling me that Android is so much easier to drag and drop, that's the direction I wanted to go. Just a little p***ed off at the moment if I'm honest.

Had a loo-k a Airsync but the reviews from people with HTCs weren't great and I really don't want to waste £5 on something that probably won't work.
 
Easiest way is probably install ES File Explorer on your phone. Then browse to a shared folder of music on you mac via WiFi and copy to phone.
