Hi all what dose HSM mean in the terms of a lens:thinking:

Thanks Dan:wave:

Hyper Sonic Motor in sigma speak - basically the focus motor is in the lens and doesn't need an in body focu motor to work

Its just iv been looking at a lens and it say's no HSM so dose that mean its no good???

No just means the camera body needs a motor with a screw drive to AF so no in body motor means manual focus only

Hi all what dose HSM mean in the terms of a lens............Thanks Dan

for example == if you had a older Nikon D40  - compatible lenses will have the focusing motor inside the lens. Later models moved the motor inside the body so a greater range of lenses could then be used with an Auto-focus feature.

Sigma put the motor inside certain lenses and designated them HSM - so they are compatible with the older Nikon D40

and as I am new here, I shall add ........I think.....:D

Not a matter of old or new for Nikon, rather price related. Nikon models with no in body focus motors are D40(x), D60, D5000, D3000. They are all lower priced models. All other DSLR Nikons, old or new, have in body focus motors.

There are Sigma lenses that have in lens focus motors that are not HSM. These lenses will focus on D40 etc. just more noisily than HSM lenses (eg. 70-300 f4-5.6)

Anyway, the OP has a Pentax, so AFAIK all Pentax mount lenses will AF.
