Hi,

I am looking to get a Circular Polariser for my EFS10-22.

I've already got the 'normal' Hoya Circular Polariser for my Kit Lens and really pleased with it.

But when I started looking for a Polariser for my 10-22 I also took a look at the Hoya Pro Range. BIG price difference with normal Polariser around £50 but the 'Pro' one over £100. I was just wondering what the difference is? Will I notice the difference? Or should I be looking at something different?

I seem to be asking a lot for kit advice at the moment, so thanks again in advance...

Hi Mark,

The Hoya Pro1 Digital filters are produced to be used with digital cameras, I can recommend some reliant eBay sellers in Hong Kong where you can purchase the Hoya Pro1 Digital filters for the around the same amount you mentioned in your post.

Also take a look at Amazon sellers. I have been able to source genuine Hoya pro circular polarizers from UK suppliers (so no Customs duty risks) for less than £50 for 58 mm and 67 mm sizes. Both arrived two days later (2 different suppliers). This was also a good source of compact flash memory at prices a fraction of the high street shops.
 
The main difference i believe is the thickness of the glass and the coating that reduces glare etc.
 
Cheers for the quick replies will investigate the Amazon marketplace and Ebay... It does seem the the 77mm PRO can be got for a significant saving!
 
I'm thinking about getting one of these for my 10-20mm. Also surely you'd be keeping your filters in cases instead of just in your pocket.
 
The "pro" series will help reduce vignetting when using such wide angle lenses such as the 10-20, still have some at the widest angles though I guess...

must admit I'm sure I recently read a 10-20 owner comment that he was not going to use a polariser on that particular lens again due to unwanted "effects" - I don't own a 10-20 myself so can't be sure, hopefully an owner will drop by & clarify this, for me too as I'm intending to buy the 10-20 quite soon !!

The effect is probably the polariser not giving an even effect on the sky - common with wider angle lenses, the wider you go, the worse the effect...
 
just got a brand new pro one for my 10-20 from ebay (£31) so bargains are there to be had, will see how it copes with the wider angles

I have a pro for the 18-200, which is fine if it's attached directly to the lens - if I attach it to the daylight filter then there is a tiny amount of vignetting at 18mm, but to be expected I would think....

I'd be interested to see what happens with the skinny pro ones at 10mm, let us know when you find out...

The 77mm Hoya Pro arrived yesterday and I had a play in my road last night @ 10mm. I couldn't see anything on the LCD display but didn't have time to look properly at the images on my PC.

I think the lens and polariser will get exercised this weeked so will update...
 
exactly, it's very cheap - I thought too cheap and maybe it's not the one

very interested in this thread as I am in the same position.

Spend a decent amount on a lens and dont want to stick a crappy polariser on the front, however, i havent seem anything to prove that a £100 polariser is better than a £50.

Please keep this thread updated with the outcome of your tests as I think this will help a number of people.
