This is a ring I recently photographed and retouched I would love to hear your comments, improvements, thoughts....

Cheers

Great work but ... what did you not like about the writing on the ring?

The writing makes it personal to the person that owns the ring so if the purpose of the ring is to sell it then it's best to remove the writing. Having said that, if you were selling it then the photo should show the actual condition of the ring, not a retouched version

Wow, you've done a bloody good job on that! Well done! What software did you use?

I'd be hard-pressed to say anything bad at all about that. Wow!!!! It looks really, really good...

Very tidy retouch, and jewellery is not easy to do!!

After a looking at the image several times, the only thing I'd look at changing is the hard edge to the shadow / reflection inside the ring at the top.

The edges of the other reflections are nice and soft, and that hard edge jars a little, and you could sort that out in a few seconds :)

Very nicely done... Paul Hartley/Keith Leighton et al wouldn't be too unhappy with that I reckon! :)

Can I ask (if you kept track) how much time you put into the image?

I'm not sure about the composition - where it sits in the frame. Maybe a landscape or square crop would suit better. But having said that, it is a very good image - especially considering the original(s).

Very nice, a bit cold maybe (but I think that's what you were aiming for ?)

I would go to a square crop.

looks good

what surface and how did you get it to stand like that?

Funny, Chaz Photos comment strikes a cord with my first impression - almost too perfect to be real. But hey, that's not necessarily a bad thing!

It has the look of a magazine advert. Would be great if you could give us a step-by-step tutorial of how you achieved this little work of art. :thankyou:

I used Lightroom then into Photoshop CS3, I placed the ring onto perspex to get the reflection. It probably took around 1 1/2 - 2 hours to complete. I agree with the cropping as an image it should poss be landscape or square but it was done to be put onto a website with a black background.... Hence why I had to take the wording off so it then became just a ring rather than 'someones' ring...

Yes it is on the cold side - the ring is Platinum so it needed to be. If it was white gold it could have been warmer and if it was silver warmer still.

Step by step guide - Well after focusing on the top of the ring the depth of field doesn't cover to the bottom so another shot needs to be taken for that. You then blend them together in photoshop using layers and retouch..... don't want to give all my secrets away... lol

Thanks for all your comments people.... great to hear both positives and negatives!!!!!
