Yes
you know when (some) cars start up the rev/Speedo/gauges all go from 0-Max, then back to 0, all in a split second.

How's best to capture the movement?

I'm thinking..

small tripod on the seat,
2sec timer for the shutter release..

apature set at 5.6
shutter sheed open for 3secs?

anyone done it, whats the best way to get the shot?

thanks :)

That's what I would do, depending on the look you want you will want to make things as smooth a possible  and I take it your on about the rev metre  as speedo may be a little dangerous, the only ways I'd recommend do it with the speedo is either a rolling road or digitally

hey if you give it a go Phil i would like to see the result you get from it..

cheerz..

oh no, my car does all the needles on start up.

was hinking of taking the photo.. on a 3 or 5sec shutter speed, THEN starting the car, that way I on't miss anything

I took this with the camera resting on the steering wheel a couple of years ago - not a great picture but you get the idea (SOOC).

This was half a second at f3.2. Obviously not long enough - if i were doing properly i would go with f5.6 - f8 to get a better exposure time i think.

Try the bulb setting on the camera, with a remote release, experiment with shutter timings :)

uploading now... neighbours must think I'm nuts lol

here you go, just had to try it out...

All on ISO 100, Manual Focus and with a tripod on the seat, a 2" timer also used and LiveView to focus too. Push button engine start was also a great help. I've only sharpened the pix.. to 400 (0-500).

well chuffed..
anyone else going to have a go now? :D

They look brilliant!

Props on the car obviously but the shot looks really good! I think it's one of the only occasions I can think of where the colour tone doesn't matter! The reds of the dials just fill the area!

10/10!

Agreed, the last one is the best, the dials on my car only flick round to 1,000 RPM and back down, so not as exciting.

Great shots well done

the last one is definitely the best for me, but one (being very picky) point of it is the fuel dial isn't as smooth as the others, it looks like the needle has done the full swing and then has gone back up again to the actual fuel level.

yep, I've only half a tank left. so the needle goes back to how much petrol you have once its done it 'sweep'

Wicked shot dude. From your description I wasn't thinkin it was gonna make much of a shot, but the results have proven me completely wrong. Awesome work
