want to hit? Who said anything about wanting to hit.

Hitting out would be a knee jerk reaction, exactly like in the video of the black guy hitting the monkey man. One reaction to being made to jump is to lash out. In order for a lash out to connect you need to be within a proximity of the thing that is making you jump.

Very few people whould step towards something and deliberately land a punch (note that I didn't make the same mistake as you and say "nobody") but plenty could have lashed out given a closer proximity

I know people that would just charge at it rather than just lash out.
I wonder if there are out takes (putting my 'it's all actors' belief aside)
