How would you light this?

I've asked a simple question based on taking the advice of others who suggested the two strip boxes. If you wish to provide information that pertains to that question I'm all ears.

I'm not going to have time to faff around with different lighting set-ups. If I'm going to do this strip softbox either side I need to know if to make it work for more than one the boxes will have to be too far away to be effective.
That's not right. There will be plenty of power from the strip softboxes, the real problem will be lighting more than just the edges - but I've already told you the answer to that one - a fill flash from the camera position.
And the larger the group, the more important the fill flash will be, so just turn it up with the groups.

Thanks Garry. I wasn't exactly talking about power, but instead was referring to inverse square law. With lights either side and a group of three I'll have to have them a reasonable distance away in order to have the light a fairly even exposure across the shooting area.

My question was will the strips still have the same effect moved out and roughly how far out will I have to move them?

That isn't how it works. All that you'd get with a group of say 3 or more, almost regardless of distance, is the edges of the outer ones lit and the one(s) in the middle getting no light on them, unless they happened to be further forward.
But the fill light solves that problem. In effect, the fill light would become the key light and the rim lights would become effect lights

That's great, thanks.

The trick is NOT to have them in the same plane - but have the centre dancer slightly further forward so that the rim lights hit them all. Then use the fill from the front to give a pleasing balance. You are going to have to make time for a little experimentation.

Yes, that makes perfect sense, thanks.

Yes, that does make perfect sense - but be aware that if people aren't exactly where they need to be the shot will be a complete failure, so that fill light (which is needed anyway) becomes absolutely vital.

Yes, I recognize the lit area will be tight. Thanks again.

why not just keep it simple? One 500w head and a big Octabox.

Alternatively, get someone else to sort the lighting out.......
(only joking!);)

In the end the shoot was turned on its head because the background paper roll was a dud with a huge crease down one side. Utterly useless.

After several minutes swearing I calmed down and remembered I was in a school! What we did instead was kind of mimic a low key stage set using the school hall floor. It worked okay considering.

BTW, the company I got the paper from have issued a refund and replacement roll.

Which company was it as a refund AND a replacement sounds like they care....

Creativity Backgrounds. Responded within 20 minutes, will have refund today and replacement tomorrow.

It was a school, Marcus. Cannae post shots of students.

Why ever not?....any way you should have took some test shots of your assistants if you were worried.

Who says I'm worried?

Too busy looking after Noah to edit owt yet, but they're not spectacular anyway.

I'd rather okay it with them first whether it's necessary or not. :)
