I am off to Spain on holiday next week. Have got some shots in mind with some local wildlife out there. In order to do this I will need to keep my camera on hand, even when just sitting out on the terrace chilling.

Will strong sunlight and heat affect the camera? If I need to have it to hand I may need to leave it in the sun and heat.

well surly u can keep it out of direct sunlight - even if u just put a towel over it:)

I think carrying around or sitting by you on the terrace will be ok, just don't leave it in the car if you have one, that would probably damage it.

A short extract from the D200 manual...

Do not store the camera in locations that-
"are exposed to temperatures above 50 °C/122 °F (for example, near a space
heater or in a closed vehicle on a hot day) or below –10 °C (14 °F)"

Try not to subject the camera to sudden changes in temperature as that can be worse for it (and the lenses) than extremes. If at all possible, don't leave the camera lying around in direct sunlight, keep a cloth (even a hankie) over it to give it a bit of shade.

Just to add that I've wandered around all day with my D70 (and D200 - but different days!) slung around my neck in temperatures in the mid to high 30s (centigrade!) and they haven't suffered (I did!). As a rule of thumb, if it gets too hot to hold, chances are it's got too hot...

ISTR something about Nikon rubber covers coming loose in high temperatures - not had that problem with mine. Yet! Back in the days of film, my wife left a FujiFilm APS compact on the dashboard of our hire car in full sunlight for 4 hours or so. That DID get too hot to touch but still works fine (or would if I de-retired it and refilled it with batteries and film!).
