How was this shot lit? A new challenge

Cool idea. I've not read any other replies (but seen the page count, so someone has probably nailed it), but thought this would be fun to do anyway!

Key - diffused light front-left of the subject, looks like a brolly shoot through (unless it's an octobox). It's just above eye level. There is some slight spill on the BG, which he seems pretty close to.

Kicker - grid spot from back-left of the subject, either that or a very close and low bare flash.

Fill - could either be a white reflector or a very low powered diffused source. Either would be subject right.

Nice shot, and good idea :)

Go on then - what lighting was used here?

Not sure if I can add an image for people to think about but here is something different straight out of the camera.

Was it a tight spotlight from above, slightly behind and slightly to the right, with the subject a reasonable ammount away from the background?

Sorry guys, I've been busy and completely forgot about this, no excuses!

AliB was right again, this was lit with natural light only and I threw it in as a bit of a curveball as it does look like a reflector was used.

Oh heck!

I'm going to be a real coward now and revert to Richard's pic (above)

Come on folks, how was this one lit? :)

I reckon it's done with a large softbox. There is also another light on the rear wall, diffused with some white fabric draped over it.....close?

*impatient* let's have the next one FITP :)

THERE IS STILL RGREEBY'S IMAGE TO FIGURE OUT...

single head(possibly speedlight) lit from a bove with a gel on the frontwith a grid?

Single flash to the left (right to us) of the subjects ?
With a reflector on the other side

DJS is pretty close. The shot was a single flash at a height of approx 2.5 feet high about 10 feet away slightly behind and to the left (of the subjects). A reflector was pretty much at head height. The shot was taken from a gantry type thing (from above)

Yes we wedding photographers use a lot of on camera flash, and a surprising ammount of off camera flash!

Yay! Although, most of my photos are on the external hard drive, and probably won't have time to dig out a photo tonight.

So, whoever wants to post the next photo, feel free!

First reply gets to post their image!

O.K. I't run with it...

This is another shot of singer Ed Quartey and it should be pretty easy to work out how it was lit
ed_quartey_gels.jpg

And you get an extra prize (same value as the main prize) if you can tell us where it was taken...

Is it a front light with a grid a rim light behind with a blue filter.

And is it in your studio?

Getting there;) - but not close enough:'(

Time for a bump? Someone must be able to work it out:)

HMM, light behind, with blue gel.
light in front of ed and third with red gel above you?

Just the softbox, to create backlighting/shortlighting

Oops, said I wouldn't post answers in case I prove that I'm a fool by getting it wrong...

Shortlighting? Can you explain for us numpties please.

Shortlighting? Can you explain for us numpties please.
Short lighting is where the face (or any other subject isn't square to the camera, e.g. less of one side is visible than the other, and the side that is less visible is lit (or more brightly lit) than the broad side or more visible side.

The big benefit of short lighting is that it makes the face look slimmer.
Here's an example

Oops, that's an unedited version, wrong colour space too, not to worry it shows what shortlighting does

Many thanks Garry, oh and by the way, you were obviously correct, I just wanted to get this thing moving again.

Hmmn... that means it's my turn again.
Let's up the game a bit and have something slightly unconventional and maybe slightly less easy
shoes_red.jpg

I'll give you a clue, it was just one light

It looks like a long exposure to me and you have painted her with the light.

That was obviously just too easy - painting with light using a small torch. 30 second exposure.
