Good afternoon folks,

Just wondering if anyone could link me to any good guide/article/tutorials etc on how to get the best results using an external flash. I know all about bouncing the light to soften it and reduce shadows etc... but what I struggle with is getting the correct exposure while using flash. I find for me it's more like a guessing game.

For example, gig photography: The reason you are using a flash, is because there is not enough ambient light for you to get the desired shutter speed to freeze the moment and correctly expose the image? So, am I right in thinking you would expose for the background, allowing enough time for the ambient light to come through and the flash should freeze the subject?

What about an indoor portrait shot: Do you always have to shoot in manual mode and expose for the subject as you would do as if you weren't using the flash. Eg. Lets say I want to shoot at f8, but the available light means I have to use 1/3 shutter speed. Obviously that's not going to work due to model and camera shake. So would mounting the flash and just turning it to TTL help this?

I think I may be confusing things here :bonk:
