How to use a tripod

Ok so the other week I did a wedding without a tripod (well it sat next to me) but I've not used one very often.

When I take a shot I use AV and often meter on the background, then move the camera and auto focus on the eyes then compose the shot and take it. How do I do this with Tripod? Do I move up and down with the tripod for each shot?

I would guess a monopod would be more handy if you move around a lot.
Are you getting good results metering on the background?
I would have both focused and metered on the face (focus on the eyes, of course), hence the question.

For a wedding...have you thought about hand held metering and manual settings?

Is it essential that you use the tripod? Sure its nice but I have just got some of the 30x20 photobox prints done from wedding shots (to be used at wedding fairs) and I did not use a tripod in any of them.

Well Brains you sort of hit it on the head. Do I need the tripod. The only thought was it helps get stability to the shots.

If you use a dslr, try setting the exposure by taking a photo of your hand lit the same way the subject would be.
Got that piece of advice from a friend, not for a wedding, but it should work anyway
You might want to visit a church with a friend of yours and try it.
