Hi been offered a camera at a silly price is there any way to tell if its been stolen

Ask them where they bought it.Ask to see the receipt.Ask how long they have had it.Ask why they are selling it at that price.Or is it you really don't want to know.

Local police?
Or check to see if it's listed HERE or on the TP Stolen thread.

It's not very scientific, but in addition to the above, I'd be looking to see if it has a box? Are all the cables and software CD's present? Does it have a memory card with it and are there any pictures on it? Do you know the person who is offering the camera - are they trustworthy, or are they known to be a bit dodgy?

All of the above.

But just sometimes you can pick up a bargain, and the person is trustworthy :)

£2000 told him to tell his m8 not interested as dont know where its from as he has no proof of buying it

Was it a five grand impulse buy, and he just lost the receipt (washing machine?)?

Seems legit.

Was this someone you know or a was it advertised somewhere.
If its someone you know get the serial number give Canon a ring and if it was for sale on another site IE Gumtree or alike it's probably a scam.

That is the sad thing there isn't a good way to tell what is stolen and what's not. But you don't want to be the guy accused of stealing it or losing it to the police impound.... If its too good to be true it is!!

With a camera like that you'd expect him to have bought it for professional use. So it's more believable if he's got a job requiring such a high end camera.

If he's a builder or plumber then that's another big warning sign!

Its a mate of a mate he said came from back of a lorry ive told my m8 that it could be traced and not to touch it

With the prices plumbers charge these days I would have thought they could easily afford to lose 3k on a 1DX.

Bloomin heck 2K maybe but definitely not 3K:lol::lol:

A cautionary note. As this is such a "too good to be true" price anyone buying it is on the cusp of committing the offence of Handling Stolen Goods. This is because the buyer could reasonably assume that it is stolen property due to the ridiculously cheap asking price.

As it is such a traceable item and also very likely to be stolen I would give it a very wide berth.

I've just been offered a MacBook Air 11", dual core 2Ghz, 8Gb DDR1600 and a 128Gb SSD for £50. Now I could of afforded this easily but when I had a look at it it already had a 'user name' (a female by the name of it) that was passworded and I could only log in to a guest account. There was no discs or anything else with it so I took a quick look at it and handed it back.

A £900+ machine was at least as likely as a £2K 1Dx to be 'stolen goods' and I'd have nothing to do with it. The serial number label had been removed from the Mac but it still had the serial number logged into it asa will the 1Dx, you could take the label off but you can't change the insides. I'd advise anyone to think past the initial WOW factor and think hard before buying something that's obviously HOT. You will get BURNED!

came from back of a lorry

Perhaps this is a phrase which has fallen from current usage, but when I was a lad this indicated that it is an item which has not been legally acquired and not that it has been delivered to the shop by the usual means :)
