I've recently bought a grey paper background but as you can see from the image below I'm struggling to get it to look even. I'm guessing that there is light spillage from the subject light. I used a soft box just out of shot in the top right corner with a reflector low down on opposite side for fill, but it just doesn't look right to me. I'd like all of the background to look even. How would you light this?

Unfortunately, although you can 'mend' it on computer, there is nothing you can do to get it perfect in camera.

The problem is, you're not using it just as a background, your subject is sitting on it as well, so it has to be affected by the lighting on her.

If you were using it just as a background, then having enough space between the front subject (the little girl) and the rear subject (the background) would allow you to light the background separately if required, and for it to be unaffected by the light intended for the front subject.

I agree, that's a nice natural looking photo of a beautiful kid, job done.
Why anyone wants a background without shading or colour variation is beyond me, nothing in the real world is seen that way.

How about the Mona Lisa against a white background:) lovely!

Yeah, I just answered the question - I'm not suggesting that the background should be a solid colour:)
