Yes
Yes its probably coz I'm a girl that I don't know this.

Long story short :D

Mum buys new car
I've always loved mums current car
Mum decides not to trade in - so I can have it
I have to sell my car for funds for mums car (She would have got £1000 trade in price)
I have no idea how or where to sell a car
No use trading in mine as trade it wouldn't be that much, but selling privately would get £1000

Help and advice greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!!

Sarah

Google "Autotrader" or you could try the Bay,.....:)

Don't use "We buy any car car dot com". Don't want to encourage any more of that bloody advert.

Generally speaking selling to a trader/garage will get the lowest price.
Private sales will get the highest price.

Judge the price to ask for by private ads for the same model in newspapers.
Have a look at the Used Car guides in newsagents etc. They often give a good idea on values and sometimes selling tips.

If you put an ad in a paper say "No Traders".
Stick to your asking price. Folk will try to talk you down.

Don't part with the car until you have the money in your accouunt.

Be sure the buyer knows they are buying "as seen" (no guarantee). However if a buyer asks if you know of any faults or previous accidents etc. you must give honest replies.

Give it a bloody good clean... Also do inside the doors & around the frame as if that looks clean the inside does too (strangely enough) But dont steam clean the engine as that will loosen any leaks that have sealed themselves....

How much TAX & MOT have you got left on it? If you have quite a bit on each that usually goes down well with prospective buyers...

DONT have the smell of fresh coffee in it as that only work when selling houses :naughty: (sorry but couldn't resist that bit - good tip if your selling your house thou...)

We put a sign in the window when we sold one recently and left it on the road outside our house. We sold it within the day and had lots of interest.

what is it? foxy loxy wants a focus

also tp classifieds as its not much effort if you're doing the other and gets more people to look at it

Why? Isn't their money as good as everyone else's?

A few tips for selling a car privately:

1) never let someone go off for a test drive on their own, even if they've left their car with you.

2) when going for a test drive don't let the other person drive unless you know they are insured

3) if you are going to let them drive don't get out of the car and walk round to the passenger side without taking the keys out first

4) Don't allow the prospective buyer to bring people with them on a test drive

5) Don't agree to meet somewhere to do the deal, let them come to you

6) If you get paid by cheque/bankers draft make sure the funds have cleared before parting with the car

7) If it's cash and you don't know how to check for counterfeits then get it checked at a bank first

We have a paper up in Scotland, called Scotads, I sold my last vehicle through a free advert in it. Maybe there is something similar you could use?

Take it down to your local Rom` shop for a good inside and out clean. Then take some pics (lights on). Local paper, gumtree, facebook spamming etc etc.

Good, sound, solid advice. You hear of so many instances of people being ripped off, it's better to be safe then sorry.

DON'T do as my other half did when trying to trade-in our Kia Sportage - she only went and told every prospective buyer about all the problems we had with it and we were sick of paying out for repairs.
Needless to say we didn't get much for it.

forget ebay you wont get any good money for it

auto trader is the best bet and flash is

flash in the pans advice is spot on

quick tip do a hp check on your vehicle and show it to the potential buyer - they should do one but it proves there is no insurance or finance on the vehicle - and it should make it a little easier to sell it - cost about £5

i would suggest that a male - a friend on family member goes in the car with you if the other person goes for a test drive

dig out all the service history mainly service items ,tyres brakes etc the more info the better

put in the ad NO SALES CALLS, when it's online you'll get people ringing, the first question will be "is the car still for sale", when you say yes they go into sales mode and try to convince you they have buyers waiting for your car, it's a con, there aren't any buyers, you hand over any money and that's the last you'll see of it.

The best bit of advice I can give is be realistic with the price and it'll sell, be prepared for some haggling, if you can read people you'll know how much to knock off, the last car I sold the guy was almost jumping up and down he wanted it that badly, he paid the full asking price :D

All good advice given; and don't forget, you can advertise it here

A while ago there were two vehicles advertised here; one was a smallish sedan, and the other a Range Rover going for over £20,000! I believe the sedan was sold on here

I have sold cars on the bay and got a good price from a genuine buyer - one came down from the islands of scotland, flew into liverpool airport and then train to me to pick it up, and paid £500 more than the part ex offered by the garage.
