Very basic, but hope it helps.

My first thought when I saw this was that it's a very clear guide and that nothing more needs to be said.

But my second thought was that, if nothing more is said, then this thread will rapidly drop down the forum and disappear from view. Then the only way to find it would be to search for it .........

Maybe it should be a sticky. I know the Mods don't like having too many stickies, and with good reason, but if this thread isn't a sticky then it will rapidly lose its rauson d'etre.

Makes sense Stewart, a sticky thread to help people in this section.

Perhaps a sticky with posts like this and links to tutorials, it may help, who knows.

Its a good idea but maybe its for something thats a bit to basic, nothing more than common sence is needed to work it out. Hopefully someone will benefit.

Another way is to go to google and type the following in the search box:

site:talkphotography.co.uk

then add a space and what you want to search for - no minimum number of characters

site:talkphotography.co.uk 7D and ISO

would search for threads containing 7D AND iso

I don't see the point in this as most peeps on here know how to search for something. The problem is the search function is carp and not up to scratch!

sorry mods :'(

What a nice and welcoming forum we are, someone makes a tutorial and instead of saying nice idea and thanks for making it, we list the reasons why we dont need it! :D

Something that could also be added to this is for people searching for shorter terms. For example, if you want to search for "40D", and/or "D90", the engine can't do it as the words are too short, so instead you do:

THIS

(apologies for the sarky nature of the link, I just liked the visual aid :D)

The point is, this thread is for those who DON'T know how to search!

I doubt that's the case.

I doubt that's the case.

So why the heading then?

"Talk Basics If you are new to photography, or just have a question you think is basic, then fire away! Absolutely no question is too silly or basic for us in here."

I'm presuming this is aimed at the 'what is the best batteries for my flash' type of thread or 'what camera insurance' or 'what tripod'. There are heeps of these threads on here but they are hard to find on a search so peeps start a new thread and ask the question!

You could always ignore this thread!!

Why would I want to ignore it?

schweeet.

might be an idea to add a footnote regarding the 30 seconds between searches. If all the following posts and bickering etc is staying, then here we go:

*Please note: The forum is limited to 30 seconds between ANY search. To avoid frustration, please double check your search text and settings before hitting the search now button*

If everybody used search, and it worked for them, then this place would be very quiet indeed.

That's not what TP is about. Folks want a specific answer to their particular question.

Jeez, I was only trying to be helpful to people new to photography/new to the forum/new to computers or any mix of the three.

As you've seen from my (now closed) thread on this subject, there are those who are of the opinion that we should help others to help themselves and those who think we exist to spoon-feed information to those too idle to look for themselves...

I'm MORE than happy to answer any question I feel qualified to comment on, as long as the OP has done his homework beforehand.

What's so bad about that?

Read The Manual. It's what it's there for.
If you don't understand a word or phrase, buy a dictionary or thesaurus.
Conduct a search for subjects previously covered many, many times and in considerable depth...

Some here keep harping on about newbies asking questions and how we must pander to their every whim - but what about the rest of us?

The learning never stops. There's always something new and challenging to get to grips with and if all the threads keep revolving about basic camera technique, what happens to us that have been doing this for years and still want to improve?
We drift away as there's nothing new or interesting to hold us here apart from arguments about Weddings and which brands of Cameras are better.

Whilst I agree with you to a certain degree Rob, not all people are alike.I prefer to find out for myself,as you do, but others don`t.

Plus if we get all the basic stuff in one section, like this, those of us who don`t want to trawl through which tripod, what is apachure or the like, threads, don`t have to.......:D

No - I think this section is a brilliant idea...

I just want to try and ensure that people get the most out of their hobby - half the fun about photography is trying things out for yourself... I'd just like 'some' people to realise that...

But there are a few steps that everyone should try before asking questions on a forum, as I've outlined above.

(hmmm...just got rifle-oil all over the keyboard...something else to clean now...pfft...)

Rifle oil on keyboard...that is a new one........

You know as well as I do Rob,some people will not do the legwork for themselves, they rely on others to do it for them.I don`t know what you call them, we use to call them officers.........

Anyway, enough,i`m off out for the day taking photographs and picking up roadkill for the buzzards.

How very true...:D

Okay, I've made this thread a sticky as it will be handy for some people who struggle with their computing/Internet/forum skill levels.

For those of you criticising and whinging maybe you could take the time to write a tutorial to help newcomers to photography.

I know that Frac, because I think I know you a bit, but it didn't quite come over like that! Well, not to me at least ;)

But nobody ever reads the tutorials!

I have a massive thread in the tutorials section, called Understanding Photography. It was specifically requested by a senior member on here, so it must be good! :D

It is extremely well hidden and has probably been read by about three people. If tutorials are to be an important part of this site's remit, then they need to be properly organised and flagged.

I'd be interested to hear your idea for organising and flagging the tutorials HoppyUK.

We need more new fresh content to keep the section on the radar but getting people to step up and write something is another matter.

..........

This is indeed a very simple tutorial but still useful. Most of us that have been around computers a long time don't realise how some of the most basic things seem really baffling to people new to them. I've helped someone who started off scared to click anything with the mouse in case it broke the computer so I know how things like this that look too simple to many can be a real help to beginners.

This section is for those new to photography and help should be given with that in mind. Researching for yourself is good but a helping hand telling you where to look can't hurt either.

Not sure that's too difficult Robert - give each tutorial it's own section and heading, and stick it at the top of the front page  :D

But I don't think that's what you want to do, and TBH, as I've said above I don't think that's what this site is about (and I say that having written one of the most extensive tutorials hidden in the bowels).

For me, this place is about live interaction around a subject of common interest. There's a strong social aspect to it as well. Who needs tutorials here anyway - two seconds on google will bring up a hundred tutorials on any subject you like. Why bother to search TP for them?

I welcome newcomers and enjoy answering their questions. No two are ever quite the same. I think pointing people straight to a tutorial as their first port of call, or to the search function, is not only unhelpful and a bit rude, but actually undermines the site's primary purpose.

So there! ;)

Have to say I agree that having this as a sticky pretty much undermines the message I thought this sub forum was meant to convey.

Exactly

A forum headed BASICS surely doesn't need anything else.

If a sticky is to say anything, then I think it should say something like "Hello, we welcome beginners. Basic questions are the most important - it's vital to get the fundamentals right! Post whatever questions you like here, without fear. Service with a smile guaranteed :) "

But nobody ever reads the tutorials!
That's not true, I've read yours! :D

My issue with this thread (now that it's a sticky) is that I can't view flickr/imageshack/photobucket hosted images at work, and I can't be the only one. As a result this thread is lost on anyone in my situation... considering that we can host images on the forum, would it not be better to do it that way instead?

'what is the best batteries for my flash'

Eneloops is it?? :bang:

I've often thought that a section with these questions that come up time after time would be a good idea but I've got my doubts as to whether it would stop them from being asked. People just can't be bothered to search for themselves! :bonk::bang:

What all of it? Good man

Sorry it's a bit out of date now. That's another problem with tutorials, they often fall behind with anything equipment related, and nobody can be bothered to update them :D

I read it as well mate...........:D

I've just bookmarked that - before I read this thread.

This is my 2nd post and I'm just starting out in photography so can I just say - it's VERY useful to have a forum where I can ask any basic question - but a bit offputting if within that forum there's someone saying I should find the info for myself! (Well it could be except I'm not the sort to go away).

The thing is, when it's all completely new, it can take a very long time to find the info you need because you don't know what to look for! And when there are helpful people who are happy to share their knowledge it can put the beginner on the right road much sooner!

Now I'm off to ask a basic question................

what's a sticky?

A thread "stuck" at the top of the forum. It doesnt move down the page when newer posts are made. Usually used for important info and announcements.

well I'm a newby and will be giving it a go.... thanks for the posting
