how to replicate a pic like this: car in motion

thanks

been an interesting read, because of the photo i just accidentally found.

i've seen these rig things, and not an option on cost and would scare me loads, with the only dslr i have hanging off the car!!

will try to get a couple of mates together and see (but wait for better weather and think of location)

Get your gear insured. :)

This was before I got my insurance.

Only 2/3mph is needed so I just walked next to it. Job done. :)

In saying that this is not a rig shot, the clincher for me is the distance.

Using a wide lens around 20-24mm equiv by the look of the perspective distortion, that puts something like 10-12ft minimum distance between the camera and the car. It's easy enough to check this for yourself.

For that you need scoffolding, not a rig ;)

Where do i send the 20p?

This is on behalf of Graham Curry who took the image posted as his registration email hasn't come through for the forum.

"The image was captured in moving vehicles travelling at approx 40mph, I was in the boot of my estate car using a Canon 40d with 10-22mm lens with circular polariser attached with settings being ISO 125, F4 and 1/40 shutter speed (the faster the cars travel the higher speed you can get away with, thus the keep to bin ratio is much better) and the owner of the CSL was asked to sit as tight to me as he could.

As for comments of the image not actually being part of the backdrop, well you need to go educate your eyes as I can assure you it's real and the only PP that was carried out was Levels and burn tool on the tarmac

On the same day I done a motion shot of this S2000 with pretty much exactly the same camera settings as earlier mentioned and PP was the same as before with some contrast added

I hope this has ended a lot of the speculation and know it alls views and if you care to check out my flickR http://www.flickr.com/photos/thegingerdaddy/

Yours in happy snapping

Im going to burst the bubble here. Its a mate of mines car (sold today) Its not a rig shot.

Ha! Winning my small cut of the 20p never felt so good :D

Do I get extra points for knowing it was a CSL? Unique colour and different nose to standard M3. Very quick car. Nice :)

Richard.

Hi All,

As slideordie has posted on my behalf the image was a boot to car shot and i have posted the technical detail there too

another recent image i took using same method on a dual carriageway beside my house, should have used manual setting for this as esposure was way out :(

Cracking stuff. Sometimes the simplest solutions work the best.

inspiration right there

Many thanks to those who got involved in all the speculation but more so to Graham for posting the information on the shot.

I'm pretty much a car nut and also followed the drifting on dworks and also noticed some mag shots for banzai etc?

Thanks again

To be honest, the lighting on the car doesnt match the lighting in the street in the slightest, I wonder if they were even in the same shot?
The second giveaway is the (lack of) texture in the road surface - this doesnt match the change in focus and increase in texture in the buildings in the distance
The third thing is the focussing distance in the street and building doesnt appear to match the car

i agreed with this post, the first impression is that the car doesn't belong to the background, looks like someone pastes it onto a blurred back drop

but read thru everything found its genuine, unbelievable!!!

Yes i have covered the Irish drifting from it's formation in 2003 for web sites and via this got involved with the print media, now I am a full time freelance photographer working with Modified Motors (Ireland's only modified car magazine) CarSport and PaceNotes magazines also so my work certainly gets about :)

The CSL image was just a last minute "Graham the car is sold and i want motion shots please" so i was more than happy with the final result especially with the backdrop and the reflection of H&W crane in the window of the drawing house etc.

The other images posted are part of feature shoots for MM

when the owner of the CSL told me about this thread this morning it certainly made me giggle at some of the speculation so i hope people are happy they have "the scenario" of the shot from the horses mouth now and will happily go and try it out without the mass expense of rigs

PS it has taken me a while and a lot of deletion to get this sort of image hanging out of my boot, especially when most of the cars i work with have very stiff lowered suspension and my own car runs harsh coilovers :)

cheers
G

and the following is another huge favourite of mine travelling along a back road at about 60mph :)

Just flicked through your car shots - very nice. Definitely something to try.

Hi Oli,

Top of the bus station carpark?

On top of Hackpen hill (white horse) Marlborough downs. You can park up there in the car park on the edge and get good shots.

There's a few others I want to try. The Cellular operations carpark at night (peatmore lake) has nice rows of lights that I think would look good. It's just getting around to ask permissions.

Places to avoid. Renault building - the security get shirty. Also the windmill estate don't allow photo's as there's some sensitive buildings, which is a shame as there's a few with large glass windows that have great reflections.

Hope this helps. If you come across anymore share them :D

Hi

nice cerbera, that yours? always loved the TVR's

I tried one time at windmill estate and yes I got moved on, also tried at the nationwide building and was told to move on there too :)

That carpark sounds and looks good, I've tried in the carpark by the Wyvern but not at the top more urbany type shots on the lower levels.

I'll have to think about those others you have suggested as I cant pinpoint them off top of my head.

Maybe taking this offtopic!

have you tried any movement ones like those of Graham?

Nope - no movement ones yet - something to try.

Yup the TVR is mine.

Hackpen hill is the Broad Hinton to Marborough road over the downs, off the A4361 wroughton to Avebury road, on top of the white horse.

Plenty of car parks for the gritty shots I suppose.

Someone did some ford shots on top of the Debenhams car park

graham that last one is bloody amazing m8
and love scrabo tower in the back ground :D

the water spray makes the photo and the fact that myself and the owner live where we can see the tower means that the fact it's in the photo holds some sense of "home"
