How to replace/fix backgrounds

Im starting out in the portrait world and would like to know if anyone could tell me how to replace/fix background on a portrait for example. if i took a nice portrait with a background i was unhappy with how would i go about replacing it with say a pure white background, will be using adobe cs4, but not very fimilar with it yet

To be honest if you are looking to do portraits, learn how to shoot to remove the background. Doing it post production rarely looks right although amending/cloning here and there can usually be done easily.

To get a white background, shoot with a white background. Rarely will your image look good.
