This is something I did a few years ago in PS. I sorted all (most) of the rips and creases but never got around to sorting the stains out. It's from where the photo has been cellotaped together. Any tips on how I can go about doing this? I think converting to grey scale will be easier to work on and then convert back to sepia.

Old trick from way back when. What you need to do is to make the image overall the same colour. As it's a mono image this won't effect the final result. In the film days we would use a medium red filter, but today you could simply work on the red channel Turn off the other two and then save the image to work on. Apply the sepia result prior to printing.

Just did a quick look at the image.. Using the red channel does get rid of the stain but there is still some marks left. However nothing that a little retouching wont cure

Sorry forgot I posted this, thanks for the reply.

I switched off the G and B channels but the image seemed to loose some of the detail? Should I have changed the mode to mono first?

Anyone else got some suggestions?

Try changing to Lab mode first. This is a Luminance + 2 colour space mode (Image->Mode->Lab). You'll need to select the L channel.
