How to make money quick ish?

Whilst reading this there's only one thing that keeps coming into my mind... why not a second hand 5D Mark II?

I've never understood why anyone other than sports/wildlife types would go for the 7D over a 5D.

Though good luck Christian, but if you do not get it by Christmas do not be disappointed, just keep on saving!

I've done quite a bit of reasearch and I do take quite a bit of wildlife photos as I feel uncomfortable taking pictures of people atm and in my opinion I would rather a new camera rather then a second hand aswell (my flickr is mostly animals, this is my best set from my holiday, http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=433800)

Christian, I dont mean to come over harsh, and if I have Im sorry!!
I say the same thing to my daughter when it comes to laptops and mobile phones.

But why do you need a £1000 camera if you dont have an income or the money to buy? Whats wrong with a used 50d for half the price? If Photography is a passion than any camera is better than no camera.

Actually just as I posted that, I had a better idea.

Christian, I'd very strongly recommend buying yourself the top quality lenses that you are after (70-200 F/4 and such) instead of buying that 7D.

Think of it this way, a top quality lens such as the Canon L series will last you a life time if it's not bashed around too badly. Whereas a DSLR will become outdated in a few years. And you'll be skipping out the budget grade lenses, where people end up 'buying twice' and upgrading to the better quality lenses anyway.

If photography is something you believe you will always be serious about, I'd say buy the lenses, and keep using your mothers 500D whilst you can. It might not have the best controls but the the image quality at the end of the day is not going to be too different by buying a 7D, but could be vastly improved by buying great glass and it sounds like you have the cash to buy some very good glass.

I wonder if anyone would disagree with my advice here?

Sorry, I ment that last year around this time I started to save for the 70-200 f4l and bought it with the money I saved combined with my birthday money then with leftover christmas money I saved up and bought the 50 f1.8

I feel my next upgrade should be a new body as my mam will not let me go out by myself with her camera (I know its odd but she feels better letting me go out with a £1000 camera :S)

OK mate fair enough, If thats what you want I am sure your be very happy with a 7D.

Good luck in finding a job and the money. :)

Another one here that could do with a saturday boy for workshop cleaning, sadly London would be a bit too much of a commute for you. You will have problems finding work, as there are of course restrictions on employing 15 year olds, but keep at it and you never know.

Now this is just a passing thought, are there any local independent camera shops or photographic studios that might give you a few hours cleaning shelves & sweeping floors on a saturday? You would have more chance with them than say Jessops for example, as they habitually employ older students on short hour contracts. If you can approach the independents with the maturity you have shown here, you never know your luck.

at 16 i was working weekends/holidays at a bike shop/hire place doing 8 hour days, 12 hours in the summer.

i did it because i loved bikes, got me discount on parts and i got what i wanted (a bloody amazing/expensive bike considering my age).

you dont get anything in this world if you dont work for it.

(lets not start talking about benefits lol)

When I was 16 I used to work down the mill 18 hour days for tuppence an hour. We lived in a crisp packet on the m25 and every morning we'd get up and have to lick the road clean, when we finished that it was a bath in motor oil and after work we'd be fed a lump of coal and dad would slice us in half with a carving knife.

It was a tough life.

I live about 20 mins from the nearest Jessops in Newcastle, Ill be sure to ask next time I'm there (probably this weekend) would you advise me going in with my parents or would it be better going in by myself, maybe it would set a good impression?

Joe that's freakin' excellent.

And Chris, best of luck. At least you're after cash for something a little more contrstructive than going out and getting shedded!

Marl I hope you're not suggesting Chris sells his relatives for medical research!

$1m dollars. Las Vegas. Black or Red. your choice.

Seriously though, I appreciate you are 15.... get a saturday job, ok will be minimum wage , but what skills could you offer me if I were an employer , for e to offer you over and abover minimum?

Don't forget to keep an eye on the Job Offers forum on here as well. Clicky

Don't know the rules for that section but maybe ask a mod if you are allowed to post a Job Wanted thread in there. (Don't forget to offer the mods a pack of Jaffa cakes as well, a bit of bribery goes a long way).

Joe why do you always come across like you're in your 60s?

;)

IMO it would be far better to go in by yourself to make a better impression . . . you need to show that you're mature enough to take the initiative to get out and ask for a job by yourself.

When I was looking for a Saturady job at your age, I typed up a letter and a brief CV and posted it to literally every shop in town . . . I guess these days it's EMail rather than letters but the principle is the same.

It takes more effort to throw a letter away than it does to hit delete on a keyboard - and if you've sent the letter to the wrong person it's far more likely to get passed on than an email! :)

Chris,

No idea what employment law is like or what vacancies are like your way but a lot of stores will be ramping up on temp staff for the Christmas mayhem that will be starting soon. A few speculative letters etc may help - many around Norwich are all advertising now. I am sure it won't be the most enlightening work but a means to an end. £25 a week now until xmas and goal achieved. Split that down and £3 and a bit a day is all you need.

How about trying car washing? Kid down the road from me did that to raise funds for a trip to India a couple of years ago. £5 or £6 a time for a wash and rinse. You might do 10 cars over a weekend? Worth a punt!

:D

A crisp packet? You were lucky! We used to have to live in a rolled up newspaper in a septic tank. We used to dream of living in a crisp packet, would have been like a palace to us!
We got woken up at 2 o'clock every morning by having 4 tons of rotten fish dumped us, got up, had half a handful of cold gravel for breakfast, went to work down mill for tuppence-ha'penny every four years and when we got home our dad would beat us round the head and neck with a broken beer bottle.

But anyway, good luck job hunting Christian!

rolled up newspaper? HA! You were lucky! We used to dream of being wrapped up in print. We used to live in a tub of poison.

We'd be woken up at 9pm an hour before we went to bed. Forced to eat three handfuls of coal. Then we'd go down mill naked and worked 25 hours out of every 24, and had to pay the mill owner 5 shilling for the pleasure. When we got home our dad had sold us on into slavery where we were chopped up and made into hamburgers and eaten by beer swilling chavs.

You deeply unpleasant, pathetic little man. How dare you react to a child like that on here.

May your jealousy and bitterness swallow you up.

Christian has posted with maturity and dignity,

It's a shame we don't all post with maturity.

Christian - Like most have said on here, work as hard as you can doing as many jobs as you can. A few pounds for a car wash here and there (which is what I used to do) soon mount up and you'll be there in no time.

I was lucky as a lad that my Dad & Uncle had businesses so there was always summer/weekend work available..

when there wasn't I used to knock on doors offering oven cleaning, its one of the jobs people hate doing, made a pretty penny from it too... not sure how it would work in the modern age of self cleaning ovens and peoples attitudes but ask friends and family you might make a few quid that way..

if you are knocking doors offering odd job services though be careful and make sure someone knows where you are, and get a sales pitch together.
