How to make a layout 'template'? (diptych, etc)

I already know how to do a layout like a diptych or triptych from scratch. But how do you make a template for a layout so i can just drop any photos into it? Digital Photo mag had a bunch of diptych and triptych templates on CD recently.
 
I found it! For anyone whose interested, the video is HERE. That's what i'm talking about! You can also use the clipping mask technique which is very cool but just that little more fiddly i find.
