I were flat on my stomach, 2 cameras in my hand and had to put one down and don't want to put it down on the sand...

Don't worry, lens has a B+W filter on.

Why did you have to put one down? If you needed a free hand why not just juggle the cameras?

Never mind, it was only a Nikon :-)

Late one summers evening, many moons ago, a beautiful girl asked me if I wanted to go for a nude walk along the beach!

I asked " What's in it for me?"

She said "Sand!"

:)

I suppose you could pop it in a plastic carrier bag?

I can't believe you did that, filter or no filter, one grain in the workings of the lens and you'll be having a wallet attack.
I carry a small groundsheet, it's about 3.5x5 foot (ish) reflective on one side, tough plastic or vinal stuff, weighs nothing and not only is it something to put your kit on but I've laid on it to shoot low angle stuff, keeps me clean-ish, it's also a LOT warmer than the cold ground if I have to spend a night out or wait for something to start.
I spent two and a half hours sitting on cold cement the other day, quite comfortable sitting on the ground sheet (waiting for something)

A few weeks back I was out on the beach on a very windy day with my D3300 and then a few days later decided to have a go at some astro photography. So I was there stood in the dark and decided to change lenses, as I undid the current one all I heard was the grinding of bits of sand. Fortunately, having read many posts on what to do when changing lenses, I had it lens-down. Lesson learnt.

Did you not have some sort of camera carry bag where you could rest your camera on top of or inside of?

...or a colander.
