Hi

I am going to be taking a family portrait that is going to involve about 12 -15 people. Any advice on how to get the focus right?

Stop down to around f/11 and focus a third of the way into the group. Check it on your screen as you go!

As above - but if your using a wide lens and not too far away anything frop F5.6 to F8 might work - handy if the light's low.

As above, an aperture of f8 or more will do the job. If you have 3 rows of 5 people, focus on the middle person on the middle row.

i am doing a group shot on saturday night at a local concert by a male voice choir

they will be in 3-4 rows about 10-12 persons wide

i set up the tripod at a suitable distance to get them in width ways on my 38mm equivalent wide angle...around 10-12 metres...since i dont want to use flash i will be using low speeds so i will use f4 max to get some speed around 1/4 sec.

i will focus on the middle of the front row...there are a lot of items behind them to check dof..its in a church
so if the clobber behind them is decent focus i will leave it at that

i did them 4 years ago..some members have died and they want an update...and used the same process...and it worked...

fingers crossed...;)

Well I'll look forward to the result!! Forget the tripod - UP the ISO - shoot at f/8 + and focus 1/3rd of the way into the group. What you're suggesting is a recipe for disaster! oh - and use flash if you have to - just get the balance right and you'll be fine!

no disaster old chap...did this last time

the tripod lets me analyse the group layout without peering through the viewfinder to push the shutter release...2 sec delay

however i do agree with your recommendations if i could use them
my toy gives a lot of noise..like me ..at anything over 100 iso and only goes up to 400..
the flash is built in and more in keeping with a point and shoot animal
the flash power can be pushed to 2x
so i will try some on your advice ...nothing ventured nothing f***ed up:D

why is a tripod an element for disaster...you sound like a shoot from the hip guy...i take my time

i will post the result................through your letterbox...so have the kettle on
