how to fade a photo to black?

Hey all.

I am trying to add my main image to my website homepage. The background is black and I would like the photo to fade on the left side to black to blend nicely with the background. I have no idea how to do this using photoshop so could anyone give me an idea in layman's terms about how to achieve this?

Probably the gradient tool might be the best with a white to black gradient, I'd probably do it on a layer mask.

A quick google for "photoshop fade to black" gave me this http://www.sitepoint.com/photoshop-fade-layer-mask/ as the first option. Seems to cover everything nicely

Or as above but with a transparency. This would give more flexability as the page colour will show through and can be changed without altering the image. You will need to save in a format that recognises transparency though (gif or png, not jpeg.)
