You are at the start of a journey of never ending learning young Skywalker :D . My advice would be to do one of two things (or maybe both depending on your learning style)

1. Look at the youtube videos on CS4 and CS5 as they are very similar for doing the basics. Or just google for free tutorial vids

2. Get hold of Scott Kelby's book on CS5 and start at the beginning.

If you get stuck or need clarification on anything, ask away on here as someone will always know the answer

Thanx a lot for ur help. I have been playing about with photoshop for a while trying to learn how to use it. But when i see a picture. I don't automatically think this needs to be done or that needs to be done. I want to learn how to make a picture better. lol

A couple of pointers:

1) The sensors in cameras aren't anywhere near as sensitive as the human eye and so the pictures they capture tend to lack contrast and colour compared to real life, often contain 'noise', and usually need to be sharpened, too. So there are four things to check for straight away. Depending on the level and angle of the light where the picture was taken, parts of it could be blown out (whites too white with no detail) or blocked (blacks too dark with no detail). And depending on the available light, the camera, and the photographer, a photo could be underexposed or overexposed. So here you've got an 8-item checklist you can go through.

2) Searching this forum for threads about photographic workflow can tell you more about what to look for and in what order. Either put 'workflow' in the Search box right up there ^^^ or put the following term into Google: workflow site:www.talkphotography.co.uk

Shoot in raw and then open up in camera raw. On the right there are sliders for all basic editing components like exposure, contrast, brightness play with those and you will see your photo change and will get to a point when you think to yourself 'that looks mint' and that will give you an idea of what you had to change.

Another great tool is learn to read histograms they tell you alot but try the first bit first

You pretty much have to ajust by eye. Most photo software has an auto ajust/quick fix type feature, but some work better than others and all vary depending on the individual photograph.
Best advice is try and get it as good as you can in camera, next is try and ajust the levels (brightness/darkness) finally have a go at the colours if you think they are wrong. Be aware that to get it done properly you'll need to callibrate your monitor screen first, or you can't tell if thats showing the pics properly.

Thanx a lot guys. Thats really helpful. Theres so much to learn regarding capturing pics an editing them. Seems endless. lol

There is a learning curve, in a supprisingly short space of time you could be doing the basics easly enough.
