Luck pure and simple. I have seen people killed going much less. Though it sounds like one of the guys will never fully recover.

Any knob can drive fast.
The skill is only driving fast when a. it's safe and b. not outside the ability of the car, the driver and the road.
I think the driver fell into the first category, a knob.
