How to do strobe effect? Urgent!

There may be other ways, but I believe you will need a remote setup with manual test flash button.

If it were me, I would setup for the shot, test lighting positions, then alter shutter to open for a second or two, alter aperture to expose correctly (trial and error unless someone knows how to calculate for multiple flashes?)

I would then take remote in hand, engage shutter and manually fire number of flashes to suit...
 
So the best way may be to set up a couple of flashes, expose for 1-2 seconds and just press the test button a few times quickly on my Pocket Wizard transmitter? I was hoping that it's a custom function on the flash to keep firing whilst the shutter is open?

You really need to eliminate as much ambient light as possible.

Yup stroboscopic mode, the only Canon flash which can do it is the 580EX II I believe. Press the mode button until it shows MULTI in the top left.

Then you need to set frequency and count. Example: in M mode set your exposure to 1sec, aperture and shutter speed at whatever. Set the flash frequency to 1/10 and count to 6, take the shot :)

You will end up with 6 flashes, one every tenth of a second.
 
580EX has strobe/multi mode. That bit is easy - see handbook.

More difficult, assuming there is some ambient light about, is to try and capture the moving subject against a dark part of the background.

In the link posted above, notice how the flash images are much more clear against darker areas.
 
Ah yes maybe so. I forgot to mention you need to manually set the flash power too as there's no ETTL in stroboscopic mode.
