How to do a subtle HDR... (Help Needed)

...ok Im processing some wedding photos. I have a large group, and unfortunately some people are in the shade, and some are in the sunshine ( :bang: )
Is it possible to do HDR on the image to try and balance it out, without it going all overdone and yucky ?? I use photomatrix but very very novice, any help on settings to achieve this would be appreciated

Im normally against posting links but, I found when I want only a slight HDR on my wedding work I use the following method...

HDR using layers

I use this method because its easy to tone down the end effect.

Could you not lasso one half of the pic thats dark then click refine edge increase feather up to 150 then adjust levels may work tends to work when I am doing landscapes but you never know worth a try
