How to destroy old CD discs.

They melt quite nicely with a bit of petrol/lighter fluid/bbq gel on them.

microwave is an awsesome method. Just a split second or so, until you hear the first crackle. then stop it and check the disk. the surface will look like crazy paving.

ps: I'm not responsible if your microwave blows up. :D

I've been doing this for years, totaly trashes the CD & it looks pretty :)

gallon of petrol and a match should do the trick! probably a little cheaper than a new shredder unit OR goto london on the train and leave them on their with CONFIDENTIAL written all over them, they should go pretty quick then!

Pair of wirecutters - just take a chunk out of the edge - 9 times out of 10 they'll break in half or shatter as you apply pressure . . .

Hi HWG and welcome to Talk Nuked CD's. I hope the two pages of advice here has helped you. I don't mean to hijack your thread, but was wondering if you could point me in the direction of a forum where they discuss photography? :D

Loving the suggestions in here

Ill be interested to know what HWG decides on :D

Just Clamp 20 in a workmate, get a drill and drill lots of holes in the buggers

For all the girlie girls, Alby is sugggesting that you clamp them to a brand of table made by a company called black and decker. Not a friend that you work with!

Just wanted to clear that up before there's a nasty accident!

Got another suggestion here. Put them in Will Young, Best of Rick Ashley and any folk music CD covers and no-one will ever want to go within 50 yards of them. :D

The best thing I think is to lift a floorboard and place them under your floor and in 100 years time when the floors need replacing someone will find them and no doubt have hours of enjoyment wondering what they are and will spend even more time and money looking through them on a vintage player sourced from e-bay. It won't matter to you by then anyway. ;) Do they last 100 years?

Freeze them overnight then attack them one by one with a hammer.

Attack them with a belt sander.

Shotgun target practice.

Goodness we're getting a lot of suggestions here, too many to answer you all individually. I've decided against the microwave option - I quite like using it to cook in and after buying a very expensive one I don't think I'd be too popular if I wrecked it. Petrol, gosh I can't even afford it for the car. Grandchildren - although they'd be good at destroying them, they would probably lose them first or take them on holiday to Nigeria. Scissors - I haven't got any now, they're wrecked:lol:

Under consideration - boiling water, hot oven, drill hole in workmate who annoys me:D

Maybe I'll put them in someone elses microwave and then take some photos.:woot:

I think if you drill a hole in the right place to destroy the index of the CD (so the bit in the middle) you'll ruin all the other data. You could then drill through a stack and do quite a few all at once.

Quick and dead easy.

Wear flat shoes/trainers.

Chuck a few data-side down on your patio/path and drag them from side to side with your foot. Many scratches and gouges in a split second and move to the next one. If you don't have a path, the wall on the side of your house will work just as well.

No tools, no additional cost (lecky/gas for your oven or power tools etc), no mess.

Done (as Gordon Ramsay would say)

I used to take a pair of scissors and, using just one blade, make several score across the discs. Always double checked them in the computer and none of them could ever be read.

Works for me too, the metal surface comes off very easily. (you could use it for christmas glitter :D)

Seriously, save them up for Guy Fawkes and chuck 'em in the bonfire - done.

Either that or cut them in half with a set of garden trimmers.

Blender - Anyone seen 'Will It Blend?' You can blend allsorts - golfball's, iPhone's, marble's...

Google 'Will It Blend' and you will be amused :D

It'll make mincemeat of CD's

Electric sander or angle grinder? Thread them onto a thin rope and tow behind your car/bike; battery acid; blow torch.... or generally any process that could lead to a trip to A&E and be accompanied by the line from your wife/partner "I told you not to do that"

Scribble on them with a thick tipped permanent ink 'sharpie'.

Could be removed with a suitable solvent . . .
To be rendered unuseable they have to be physically damaged.
