I've got a pile of about 100 old CD discs all with sensitive data recorded on them. My problem is I want to get rid of them, but can't bin them for obvious reasons. I do have shredding software but unfortunately not enough patience or time to destroy data that way. I've tried bending them to break them up, I've hit them with an hammer, but they just seem to resist all attempts to destroy them. I don't have a fire and don't believe in lighting bonfires. Does anyone know of a foolproof way to destroy them please?

I just use a large set of scissors and cut them in to quaters, that seems to work :)

microwave is an awsesome method. Just a split second or so, until you hear the first crackle. then stop it and check the disk. the surface will look like crazy paving.

ps: I'm not responsible if your microwave blows up. :D

Parcel them up, address them to yourself and give them to the Royal Mail marked "Fragile" - they'll come back totally destroyed

+1 for microwave, go on try one. Just not for too long ...

Give them to my wife ... and tell her she can 'play them in the car'.

It certainly worked for my U 2 and Ministry of Sound CD.

Not that i hold a grudge or anything!

:bat:

Cheers

I got a shredder from Lidl few months ago which has a CD shredding slot for a single CD. I use it to shred mine. :) I know 100 could take a while. You could bride someone for some candy :D

maplins sells shredders with cd slot for about £8 i got one and it works :) noisy though

Just snap them!

Works for me! or alternatively any of the above and more besides :)

Easiest though is a heavy duty shredder or snapping (some dont like being snapped though!).

There is the other method though. Pretend they have something important on them and treat them carefully, they are the ones that tend to give me the most problems :)

one thing you should not do is give them to the government to look after ;)

Just give them to the government. I'm sure they'll lose them never to be found again just fine.

Blend them into a fine powder. This can be sprinkle on your breakfast cereal if you then so desire.

Garden shredder should do the trick or let some kiddies hold them for a few minutes either way destroyed.

Parcel them up, put your own address on it and get City Link to handle delivery and I guarantee that parcel will never be seen ever again.
Or I wonder putting them in the washing machine might do the same to them. Some six socks (all odd ones) had gone through a temporal rift that had developed in my washing machine and are floating about in another spacial dimension. Perhaps the same may happen to your CD?
Being serious now, perhaps you could put them in a big saucepan of boiling water? Sounds like the oven idea is probably the best one, although the microwave one sounds like a lot more fun. :)

putting them in a preheated oven on some tin foil for a brief moment is a good suggestion

Just lay them by a window that the sun shines through. The car dashboard or rear shelf is a good place. The sun will destroy the data and then make them all wrinkly if you leave them long enough.

Best to do it when you leave your car in long stay car park while you go on holiday, works a treat.

Glue them all together and make a door stop................don't forget to stand it on its flat side or it will just roll away Dhoooo....OR November the 5th as one or two have said.

Del.

I used a junior hacksaw to destroy mine.

I just give em to grandkids 5 mins they unusable :) or a good rub over a sheet of Sandpaper or Emery paper prob do the job.

Oh, yes. This works wonders!!!

I use kitchen scissors, the "chop up chickens" type in to quarters and then in the bin.

I normally just snap them. Fold one way, then the other, the plastic shatters into the bin and the recording medium splinters away in tiny pieces.... Having said that, next time I think I'm going to try the blow torch method even for one or two... You know, that might make some interesting photo oppos.....

I do what "Fabs" suggested (#19), a few deep scratches across with my wifes best kitchen scissors, seems to do the trick & doesn't take long to do.
:)

garden leaf-shredder?
