Simple enough question ;)!

Who here can tell me how "Nikon" should really be pronounced, please? I've heard various different ways in YouTube videos and am now thoroughly confused . So, is it ...

1. Nick-con

2. Knee-con

3. Nigh-con

Just pick a number, but only if you're sure about the correct answer (I really don't need to be any further confused, thanks) :p.

Thanks in advance for your help :).

Hmmm, actually, they are all wrong. The name Nikon actually consists of three syllables in Japanese - `Ni`, `Ko`, and the syllablic `N`.

The syllabic `N` is actually quite hard to pronounce correctly for English speakers, and indeed, it is often not pronouced that clearly by Japanese people. It is kind of like an N with a more nasal sound...a bit like trying to say `ng` in English...but don`t stress the `g` too much.

Hence, I`d suggest...

Knee + Ko (with the `o` pronounced like the `o` in `knot`) + N (pronounced a bit like a nasal `ng`).

Same goes for Canon by the way...but I just say `Canon` like any other English person would when I`m in a Japanese camera shop.

Right...back to Kanji study.

I once watched a video of a Nikon employee discussing a new product and he pronounced it 3) Nigh-con. I've always said Nik-on.

Why not write to them and ask?

It all comes down to the local language and dialect. It's for the same reason that some Americans say Dar-ta whereas most of the Brits say Day-ter for the word Data.

As long as we agree that the American NEYEKON is repulsive...;):D

Now to learn NOT to split infinitives...

How to pronounce "Nikon" CORRECTLY ?

perfection, thats how you spell it. hehe

POO-con :gag::D:D:D

Just joking i say

Nick-con

I say Nick-on, but i believe it should be as RichieRich says, it's a bit like Sony (Soe-knee versus Sonny)

Personally i couldn't give a rodent's bottom what it's called, they make smashing good cameras and lenses!

I can confirm absolutely that Darter is pronounced dart-er.

Easy...O-LIM-PUSS

Right,,,this is how to pronounce it. Watch this Japanese commercial. Ignore how the American actor pronounces it and listen to how it`s pronounced at the end of the add - at about 27 seconds in. 3 Syllables if you`re really used to hearing Japanese, but I think you`ll probably find that most of you are pretty close anyway. Note now the `Ni` is more of a `knee` than it would be in English.

Who cares anyway! The Japanese are probably trying to say it more like us like they seem to do with everything over here.

Me too, but as that's the way it's pronounced on the new TV advert I will say it's the correct way too.

Personally I'm a fan of Simon and Garfunkel, so it doesn't bother me...

Its prenounced nick-on, but i say ni(eye)-con because all the cool kids do. :D

Used to call it "N-eye-kon" but saw a TV advert for a Coolpix the other day, and the chap there called it a "Nick-on" so I guess that's the correct way.

You are all wrong. It's pronounced No-Kin as in No Friends, No Family = Sad people ;)

Personally, I like the "Knee-con" option more now, having heard how the Japanese pronounce it. Although the Japanese guy in that You Tube clip appeared to saying, "Nicoh", as in ...

Or maybe it was Ricoh :D (do they still make cameras ?)

Anyway, thanks a lot for all of your answers. I feel a lot less stupid now, going into camera shops and trying out my funny pronunciations, as I know that they will have already heard every variation possible ;).

The real question is does how you pronounce it change how good a photo you take?
