okay I have the 20D, the 430ex flash and an wireless trigger. do I need to use the flash on the camera, and have a second one to use wirelessly, or can I use my one and only flash off camera with a shoot through umbrella...and use the wireless trigger to trigger it! :)

and if thats the case, how do I set up the camera and the flash to set off together. ugh!!!!

Thank you,

photochick

If I am correct in what you are asking, if you can use the off camera flash with out using the on camera flash, the answer is yes.
The basic setup is to set the camera to manual mode and use a maximum shutter speed of 1/250th second. Try setting the aperature at f5.6 to experiment. Adjust the power of the flash or move it forward or back to get the right amount of flash light falling on the subject. This is done with the wireless trigger connected. The one item that will make life a little easier is a flash light meter, it can be done without one by a little experimenting.

Welcome Photochick

With the wireless trigger in the camera hotshoe you will be able to trigger multiple flashes attached to the number of receivers you have.

Set your cameras White Balance to Flash
Start with ISO 100 or ISO 200
If you get black bars at the top of the screen when using 1/250 then try 1/160
Start at f/5.6 or f/8 and take a shot without the flash turned on to see if the screen is entirely black
Increase the aperture until it is black (eg from f/8 to f/11)
Then turn on the flash itself and play about with the power settings (1/1 being full power down to 1/64 (lowest power setting you have)

The lightenupandshoot vBook might also be a good investment
