How to clean a lens

Hi,

I've just picked up a canon lens from free cycle and it needs a bit of a clean. Can anyone recommend the best way to do this?
Would coated (glasses) lens cleaner and a microfibre cloth be ok?

Depends on what you are cleaning and the level of clean required. Are you cleaning the elements? What kind of dirt is on them?
 
no just the glass ends, wouldn't know what i was doing if i did more. Fairly new to this (still scares me a little taking the lens off, to be honest).
 
Ah righto, grab yourself a blower and something like a lenspen to clean it. It's ok as long as you are gentle. The other thing to do is see if there's anyone in your area on here who could pop round and show you how :)

Dont forget to place the cap on the body whilst the lens is off - or you will be sensor cleaning next :)
 
I use a clean microfibre cloth and a lens cleaner on my kit with no worries having first brushed off any obvious debris. Lenses are pretty tough really provided you don't start rubbing sand in to them :D

Thanks for the offer but I bit the bullet and had a go (after all it was a free lens). Its come up a treat, I thought it had some minor scraches but they've gone. I bought a kit from wildings for a fiver and used my microfibre cloth. Now I'll feel much more confident about cleaning my kit lens too!
