Hey guys hope your enjoying the weekend

i have a question.
im trying to get a black background with my camera.
ive set the shutter speed to 1/250, and the iso to 100 but i can not figure out how to change the aperture.
ive read the manual and cant seem to find anything about it.

i have a nikon d5200, if anyone could help i would really appreciate it

thanks all

mat

It would help us if you could say what mode your shooting is it manual or av mode which is aperture priority or tv mode which is shutter priority. I am a canon girl myself so not sure of the palm dial layout on Nikon.

I don't want to be funny, but did it not occur to you that the camera's user manual might have something to say about this? It took me about 5 seconds to find the answer to your question on page 59.

He said he'd looked but couldn't find anything so what is the harm with asking for advise on here. Your response seems pointless as it's supposed to be a helpful forum.

I think Stewart's comment was helpful, and makes a valuable point.

Read the manual, it's a mine of vital information.

Maybe Stuart should have just said. FYI you can find the instructions on page whatever. Saying it the way he did just made it sound unhelpful in my opinion.

I agree it's a mine of information but see no harm in asking on a photography forum.

OK, fair point, I think my original post does come across as a bit sarcastic. That was unnecessary and I apologise.

I hope you'll appreciate that I didn't just say "read the manual", though. I did check that the information was in it, and I provided a page reference.

But I'm genuinely interested to know how the OP could have read the manual, as he reportex, and not found this information. It did take me literally 5 seconds. Table of contents, Manual mode, page 59, there it is. I suspect there may be more useful information in the manual too, and I would recommend checking the manual as an efficient method of obtaining answers to many straightforward factual questions about the camera.

You can't change the aperture in live mode so I just read, maybe that's your problem?

Presumably you read that in the manual a veritable mine of useful information if people bother to read it! FAR easier to did out the computer and ask questions which some people (who can be bothered) look up in their manuals, sometimes even going online to find the manual to be helpful.

I've lost count of the number of times I've downloaded a manual for a camera I don't own to advise someone who does own it. I'm happy to help and maybe some people are too confused to reconcile the problem they have with the words in the book.

It's par for the course with forums. There are some who see this as a place to come for help, some who come to help people and most of us who give a bit and take a bit.

When I bought my camera, first ever dslr, a lot of the manual might as well have been written in another language. I just didn't understand it :banghead:

It wasn't until I had a little more understanding of the camera and how it worked, that the manual started to make sense :)

I tend to download manuals (pdf format)because it makes searching for what you are looking for much easier.

That's what I do. Nikon even make it easy for you by offering a free app (iOS or Android) into which you can download as many manuals as you like. That's how I can find stuff easily in the D5200 manual, even though I don't own a D5200...

Yes as i said in the first post it did occur to me that it may be in the user manual and thats why i looked there first.

ive read all of the manual but tbh i cant remember most of it as i didnt really undertstand what i was reading, it may aswell have been in klingon.
But yes your right it is there so i apologise for that.

maybe its time to re read the manual as i now understand some of the terms a little better

Good to se that you haven't been scared off by the "RTFM" type responses!

Yes, manuals can be hard to digest on a first read, especially if you're not familiar with the terms used. I'm by no means new to photography in general or DSLRs and still usually keep the manual in the kitbag in case I need to refer to it! (I do have a memory like a sieve though...)

Enjoy the hobby!

I use the downloaded manual too, when I need to do a particular setup/use a function, I print that section and take it with me until I master it.
Mastering one section of the manual often helps to understand another.

Apologies certainly not needed! After all this is the Talk Basics section!

The worst would be be, if users stopped asking questions out of fear of being ridiculed or whatever... I would rather prefer advanced users stop reading the Basic section!

Whilst the first part of that is absolutely right.

I can't let that last line go! I've seen too many newbies confused because they've asked a 'basic' question and been flooded with misinformation. I'd like to see people who don't know the answer to not 'have a go', but the internet doesn't work like that.

Stewart's apologised for his seemingly harsh response, but this section would be the poorer for his loss, his gear knowledge is second to none.

Oddly it's also the place that idiots come to ask questions about starting business or getting paid for their work.

Oh! I certainly enjoy Stewart's knowledge and informative answers.

As well as all the other contributors, who makes tp a treasure chest of information.

The last line should really be read in context with the previous sentence, ie a plea for no condescending, arrogant answers.
tp is - and must stay - "the friendliest place" for photographers of all kind and levels. Replying to members should be kept in this spirit as well.

So my time to apologise for not making it entirely clear and leaving room for interpretations!

A man should never read a manual.

If a man can't work out how to do something it's perfectly acceptable to ask on a forum.

I always read the manual, at least once. All the way through and every word. Then I fiddle about with the device and after that I go on line and find the tips and tricks that others have come across.

I seems to work as there is little I don't know (as far as I know) about how to use every device in my house.

The one exception is computer software manuals, I find them over-complicated and full off irrelevancies and seem more about the author showing off than about teaching the user how to use the product. With software I just dive in and work it out on my own.

quite right pal. when do men ever read instructions, or manuals,
any way in my job, I come across instructions, where from foreign goods there are no instructions,
just pictures, now either these foreigners are very smart, or we are very stupid,
or maybe they cant be bothered to translate, lol.

Almost right. Even my Grandsons can quote me now "If all else fails, read the destructions" :D
