A couple of my favourite photographers use colours and bokeh to add another layer of depth to their images which I'm really liking ATM. However no one seems to want to let me in on how they achieved it! Although they have the skills to do it in camera I'm thinking some sort of layer or texture to introduce the colours...?

This link is to an image I found on 500 that shows the look I'm after.. http://500px.com/photo/5553466

What says you?

No-one, ok...

Don't know how they do it, but it looks a bit pencil sketch-ish to me and can't decide if I really like it or not - much prefer the image to the right of it....

That image looks like it was shot wide open on a fast lens.

The orange/red bits are "light leaks", quite a popular look at the moment. Various ways of going about it but one of the most simple (imo) is by using a curves adjustment layer.

Raise the midpoint of the RGB curve so it overexposes the image. drop the mids on the Blue and Green Curves, adjust according to taste. Invert the mask and paint on where you want the light leaks to appear.

The rest of that look can also be done using curves. Probably up the reds and greens and drop the blues, roughly speaking but it obviously depends on your starting image. Raise the black point of the RGB curve to get that low contrast film look. Hope this helps! It's all experimentation so give it a go and good luck! :)

An interesting way to do it in camera would be to use a wide aperture {such as f/2.8 or below} with preferrable a longer focal length & hold something brightly coloured as close to the lens as you dare where you wish the colour to be in the frame. It'll be out of focus enough to be unrecognisable as an object but the colours will appear. You could use this concept in Photoshop using Layers aswell. I hope this idea can give you a little inspiration :}
