As I'm looking to introduce myself to PP I want to be able to do the following

1) Sharpen Eyes
On portraits

2) Mix B&W + Colour
i.e. a B&W picture converted but leave a baby top colour
or leave car coloured with the rest in B&W

3) moody topear type sky
- change the sky like topgear magazine style
- change the shading/ gloss look of cars

thinking of photoshop 8 (as photoshop is used by mainy and cheaper) or Aperature (as someone mentioned to me would be a good combo with iPhoto)

Going to download free trails, but before I do I want to know how to the above

thanks

well, my experience of #2 (selective colouring), is to mask out the 'baby', copy and paste into a new layer, convert the original layer to B&W.
infact I see you mention a car example...
thats all I did here :)

as for 1, I assume selection and unsharp mask, and 3. moody sky, would be levels and desaturation.
but I'll wait for someone (anyone/everyone) with more knowledge to confirm :D

Hacker has a very good tutorial on eyes in the tutorial section.

Haven't done a tutorial for #3. :D

thanks for all the replies

sweet

shall i try photoshop elements 8 trial first over Aperature (assuming there are free trials for both)?

looked a tutorial 1 briefly and will have a further read when i get home

are pics working in tutorial 2, as not show on (cough) work computer LOL

FWIW Elements will be a lot better at that sort of PP than Aperture would.
