Ok in aperture at the moment I seem to have them as

Year
Month
Event

Is this how people do it as I am thinking having it as

Year
Event

I tend to use Year / Event. With occasional a sub folder in event

You guys using Aperture by any chance? If so screen shoots be a good idea to share :)

LR as well

Thats ok i suppose the naming can be done same in either really.... Ive been meaning to move to Lightroom sometime missed out on last offer.

I use LR and sort by Year/Date and then key word

For certain shots I.e. Sky I will put in their own non-date related folder with a descriptive title such as "sky" (yes, a bit obvious!)

Keywords / meta data is a great tool, I will admit I'm a bit crap at remembering to do it myself (must get better!) but the principle is sound. I just imagine me in 20 years trying to find that one photo I know I have somewhere and sifting through them all going where / when did I take that shot?

I have a main folder for each year. Within that folder I have subfolders named with the format yyyymmdd_Event name or location. Makes it pretty easy to find individual shoots. Then I use a bit of fine tuning on import by using presets that include keywords. I usually only add at this stage keywords for the place name and event i.e. airshow, railtour, event name or whatever might be appropriate.

One useful tip I have picked up is to use keyword hierarchies. For example i have a keyword hierarchy UK/England/EastMidlands/Leicestershire/Leicester. By just adding Leicester, LR adds all the others for me. By adding another keyword hierarchy of Transport/Railway/Trains/Railtours, I start to get more future searching flexibility. By following this approach with each import I can easily search for any railway photos taken in the east midlands even though I didnt specifically have to enter those keywords manually to each photo.

The more hierarchies the more flexibility. This approach has saved me hours over my previous methods - I now only have to enter 5 or 6 keywords and LR adds in the others. It takes a while to build your hierarchies and then revisit your old photos, and I still have to fine tune them occasionally but the plus side is that the system has dragged out some real gems I had long forgot about.

Thanks for the tips. I've modified my date structure to include event names (if any) on the individual days.
2013
- September
--- 01
--- 02 School Sports Day
--- 04
--- 12 Camping
--- 13 Camping
--- 16

In addition use Digikam "Tags" (keywords) to find people, subject types, places.

This roughly how I set up my folder list (year, month, day). I too right in a location manually by renaming the folder after upload. I visit local locations sometimes more than once a month, especially deer during the rut.

Once the month is over I also rename the month by adding a numerical month number to the front of the month name (01 January, 02 February etc). This is so the folders appear in month order rather than alphabetically.

Actually So do I. "09 September" as soon as the folder is created.

I'm wondering if there are any drawbacks to this date/folder structure?
