How Much???

Lord yes, I stopped when they went to a pound a packet, thought that was too much.

Some brands are more expensive than others, but you can expect to pay 6-7 quid for a packet,
and many now only contain 18, not the full 20.

And TBH I didn't see any notifications about it either, they just stopped putting the number on the side of the packets.

Th price remained static, but it was still a ( stealthy) way of adding 20% price hike.

4.10 for 20 Marlboro Menthol in Greece. €, not £.

About £1.90 for 20 Camel Filter Classic in SA. That's the old ones, which are no longer available in the UK AFAIK. The price is a bit misleading though, because of the poor rand/sterling exchange rate.

I know smoking isn't, or shouldn't be, enjoyable and it's more a case of the relief when you suppress the withdrawal symptoms, but I'm afraid to say I love them. Ridiculous really. I only smoke 2 - 3 cigarettes/day when I'm in the UK, mainly because of the cost, but my consumption goes right back up when I go home.

This does not help us in the UK.
In fact it makes us want to beat you

Silk Cut are around £9 at home but only 4€ in Greece.

I bring home enough for 12 months. What I save, in effect, pays for my next holiday.

Popped into Morrisons this evening to buy a card and went to pay at the kiosk.. Woman in front of me asked for 40 Marlborough, the assistant said "that's £18.50 please"!

So glad I gave up 10 years ago.
Someone has to pay for the health service

glad l packed up too, but l did have the advantage of knowing a pilot that used To bring them back, SA was cheap then too :)

It is one of the features I love about lingscars website. She does a free car for smokers who want to quite. Do you realise that if you smoked 19 cigarettes a day, that is the same cost as leasing a brand new Volvo V40  I didn't got with lingscars at the time as I could get a better deal elsewhere, but it made me realise how much it actually was...

Now if we think that is much, I don't dare to add the costs of cups of coffee. Yesterday I had a 7 cup day ;)

Ms Whiplash rears her head again!!! :P Even €4.10 adds up PDQ so I'm glad I managed to quit many years ago (when they hit £2.50/20 B&H). I only know the Marlboro Menthol price since we brought a brick (200) back for a friend. We know of people who bring back a couple of suitcases full twice a year - or used to. Apparently they aren't making any trips this year, maybe they got sussed!

Ive just realised, once again, I'm still a smoker. I fancy a nice Gauloises Blonde now :(

I am a dried out alcoholic and I gave up drinking (bottle of scotch a day) and smoking (40 a day) eight years ago but I still get a craving for a ciggy every now and again. Strangely, I have never had the urge to drink again.

The money saved from not smoking bought me my first camera and got me addicted to photography instead. :)

Lol so it didn't save you much then :)

Going to Zurich every 6 weeks has it's advantages. Duty free - £34 for 200 Benson Silver :)

I usually risk 4 or 5 sleeves in each suitcase, but always wary of 1 of our cases going `missing` which would negate much of the savings made. Sniffer dogs are also sometimes used for the bulk-importers, so I don't want to be flagged up with them either.

Interestingly, this year there were signs up at the airport Duty Free saying 800 cigs was the limit per person? I still got my 16 sleeves though as my moneyboss doesn't smoke. ;)
(I've enough cigs now to keep me going till next May/June  )

I thought there were no limits? as long as you could "prove personal" use has that changed?
Only a small point I know, but isn't it also local tax paid rather than duty free?
( I can't see the difference TBH but I guess it makes the tax man happier with that label :D )

You are spot on, they should show that local duty has been paid...And basically a reasonable amount for one person. 16 cartons of 200 cigarettes can be seen as pushing it ;)

Some of the funny stuff I've seen over the years is people saying with a straight face that it is for personal use. Yes on the passenger seat there is a shopping list with friends and family names and what they want ;) There are some truly stupid people about.

BUSTED :D

I wonder where the "limit" would be set though?
As Carl says, he goes there once a year and smokes 16 cartons in a year.
That's personal use, over a period of a year. ;)

Edit, and as Ruth @viv1969 linked
Although there are no limits to the alcohol and tobacco you can bring in fromEU countries, you’re more likely to be asked questions if you have more than the amounts below.

So you can bring back what you want as long as HMG doesnt lose out TOO MUCH :D

Yeah I think it is local taxes paid, in reality. rather than `duty free`, because prices @ the airport are the same as in the town shops.

It is really easy for them to check your travel history as to see whether you are telling the truth. Further more if they are all the same it works further in your favour. So yes it shouldn't be a problem. However if you say that and then it turns out you are going three times per months, have many different types of cigarettes then it would be a bit more awkward to convince personal use.

Don't agree with that. I smoke around 15 per day, which is around 27 sleeves. Their 800 cigs per person rule (4 sleeves) wouldn't even be enough for 4 months.

True enough but not that many people travel for work to these countries
and only go abroad once a year for holiday's ( as a generalisation)

However nipping over the channel every week-end and stocking up, is taking the p*** I agree ;)

Unfortunately it doesn't matter whether you agree or not :P As I highlighted your travel history can be easily checked, if you truly only travel once per year and they are the same then fine, otherwise it could get awkward.

I missed the edit ;)
Yes that is a bit odd ;)
Someone I used to know was the head of Excise Duty and tied oils. Trust me the story behind those rules is long, complicated and way too boring. I can appreciate the difference between commercial gain and gifting.

I as disagreeing with .....not the rules. ;) :p
LOL Since 800 is the guide lines, I think 3200 is probable a fair limit to be seen as pushing it. But as I said, if it is for personal use, when they are the same, if you only travel once per year, it should be ok....Just don't have list in your pocket that you are brining in 400 for Cobra, 600 for me, with the value written next to it :)

In that case they should differentiate between Mr Smith the street cleaner
and Mr Smith head of ICI :D

And make sure its Vice versa too :p

Oh take some personal responsibility :p
Tis a culture of litigation and blame, so NO! :p

TBH that reminds me of being at school, weren't me sir twas him!
I think its regression not progression :D

Ha, no list in my pocket, they're mine.....get yer own! :D
