Hey guys, I'm starting to photo shoots for bands and gigs and I was wondering how much would be a reasonable amount to charge? They're only small bands, so obviously not into the thousands or whatever, but I really have no idea what is standard so some advice would be much appreciated :)

To be honest you'll be lucky if small bands pay anything at all..

But if you want to be professional about it, start by working out your costs and how much time it would take (including time spent getting the job, preparing for the job, doing the job, post-processing and delivering the job).

As a general rule bands don't pay for anything. You have to find someone who wants the photos of the bands and get them to pay you. There are a lot of pretty crappy mags these days that expect you to work for free as well though.

Do it if you enjoy it, and/or if you think you can make it benefit your business in some way, but be prepared to play the long game.

Get free tickets.
Get free Booze.
Get free DVD's.
Get free memorabilia.
(Don't mention the attention from women... :D)

You may also get contacts and requests to do other stuff some of which may pay real actual money although you'll just as likely get booze thrown at you, abuse and not very polite requests to go away or at least to move.

I wont of ever made a profit shooting gigs and if I got anything at all it wasn't in any way significant. One thing which I didn't expect was bands just starting out wanting to know what they looked like on stage. These days it's relatively easy to film the act and show it back but even so because of the extra work this sort of extra thing might lead to additional arm twisting :D

I shoot for a promoter/pub owner.
Never been paid, apart from selling the odd print here and there.
He's a festival organiser too.
I love music, so really don't mind doing it for beer/burgers and free accommodation.

I'm really not having s go. This boat has sailed.

But to the OP: see above! That's the state of music photography.

Contract and state the images taken of you of the crowd can be sold.
