Im currently lusting after a Nikon F100, and have been trawling various second hand sites, and a well known auction site. Ive seen quite a bit of difference in prices, and was wondering what you think would be the right/correct/fair price for one of these in good to very good condition. The prices ive seen have fluctuated between £120 to £220, so im a little confused...

Stuff like this can be confusing because as you say the price for tip top vs rough or ok can be wide ranging.
I say decide more what condition you want it to be in and go from there and hold out for the right one.

I recently bought an RB67 and watched that famous auction site for weeks until I found the nicest one at the price I wanted to pay.
Ilike to buy nice condition gear as I feel it generalyy means its been well looked after.

I've set my top whack at £60 for a very good body......after 6 months am still waiting, well the boot sales start in March and I might get lucky.

I'd say this was about right. You may be able to get one a bit cheaper (I think I paid £90 for mine 2 years ago) but £120 should get you a decent one.

I have found Ffordes to be generally fairly accurate with their assessments and Exc+ is usually in pretty good nick.

Cheers Paul. Yeah, id like the condition to be a good as possible. Im a bit precious with my gear and if I found a really good one it would make me feel better to know that its previous owner had been just as precious :D

Thanks for that Andy. I was hoping to be closer to the £120 mark, so that looks good. I guess the evilbay sellers have inflated their prices to cover their fees eh?

It does seem to be the case, over the past 4 or 5 years there have become less and less bargains to be had on the bay and I generally now buy from dealers as the price is so close and you get to see the goods beforehand. Real Cameras when I'm at home and Ffordes if I'm way up north.

That Ffordes one in the link looks good. I have bought a few bits form them over the years & have always been happy with the kit & the service. They have a cheaper one at £80 but it needs some rubber glued back on so no good for someone wanting VGC gear. I just had to slap myself to resist it though :) I have thought about an F100 a few times in the past & it is payday too.

I wouldn't be prepared to pay £200+ for an F100 though. For that much I would rather spend a bit more & get an F5.

I think there was an issue with early F100's having a plastic film rewind fork that was prone to breaking. They replaced it with a metal one eventually. Something to look for when buying an F100 perhaps as I would be surprised if much is available parts wise from Nikon for them now. I was gobsmacked to not be able to get a part for my F5 a few months ago.

They were riding at about £90-140 on eBay about 6 months ago when I last had a look (I wasn't in the market for one, just intrigue). They seem to hold their value very well so I wouldn't worry too much about it - if they are costing £120 from a dealer with a warranty, that's a good benchmark.

(ffordes tends to be a little bit on the expensive side, IMO)

I think this used to be the case FC2 but nowadays the market seems to have caught up. If I'm spending a lump of moolah I tend to go with a dealer rather then evil bay and especially one's I've dealt with before and I have never had a problem with Ffordes or indeed with Vintage Classic Cameras.

@Andysnap absolutely - thus why I quantified those numbers with "6 months ago", because the market seems to be a tad fluid. Also, if you want a high performing modern body, the F100 is a great balance between features and price. The F6 is too costly, and the Canon bodies aren't as popular.

Absolutely ^^^ I may have said it before but it will be the camera I'm buried with. It just does everything perfectly, as auto as you want or as involved as you need, top camera.

Not aware of any F100's going cheap at the moment I'm afraid :( No high end AF Nikons in either :(
