Hi, not sure if this is the right place to ask but set up a page via facebook for my best shots and I've had a friend of a friend requesting prints of some of the shots. Now I don't want to make a business out of my hobby, it is just that something I enjoy, but a little extra cash would fund another piece of equipment and I feel a bit of pride as my work would be displayed in a strangers house.
The big question - how much to charge? The lady in question wants 12x16 glossy prints. And where is the best place to get them printed?
As I say I'm not going to get rich or give up the job just yet. I'm getting better but miles away from a pro standard photography I see on here.
Any advice would be helpful so thanks in advance.

Without sounding negative here.... if you need to ask this, you're not ready to start taking money off people. It's not the sort of thing you can simply just ask a question and get an answer. How much you charge depends on many, many factors. You may charge £10.... if it was a Gursky print then you'd need to win the lottery to buy it.

Printing costs also vary, but so does quality.

Do some research and reading in here....

Turn it round:

If you had to pay how much would you expect to pay?

That's your price.

DCL are often recommended for print services. Check the print/postage costs.

Can't help with what to charge as, like you, I have no desire to turn my hobby into a job so have never looked into it, sorry.

hi Woody

What is your FB page? It would be good to see the quality of your work before advising on price. In my local area there are several photographers who do this. One sells his prints from a van in a popular holiday spot. He charges £20 for his larger prints and I cannot believe he makes much of a profit when he takes into account the time, effort and expense in capturing the shot and having it printed.

If you want to charge a premium, then as well as having a brilliant shot, you have to spend a fair amount on the actual print quality. Standard prints will fade in sunlight leaving a disgruntled customer. It's better to charge a few pounds more and spend a few pounds more on the printing.

DSCL for printing using one of their fine art options, but if you have to ask this I feel I have to ask you if you've ever printed any of your photos for your own appreciation? - seeing your photos as (large) prints will tell you more about your photography than looking at them on the screen.

Price.. have a look and see what IKEA/The Range charge for unmounted prints and use that as the basis. The minimum should be at least 3x the printing cost (the total print cost, including p&p). Don't skimp on the print quality to keep it cheap (unless you are a cheap type of person).

I'd generally charge about 50 quid , and I use either DSCL for prints or White wall if they want it on dibond, acrylic, canvas etc - that said I only ever do prints as part of a wedding package so I know jack about selling prints as stand alone
