How much to allow for a yellow filter?

Hi folks.

Just got a yellow push on filter for my old Zeiss Ikon Nettar.

I was wondering if I should allow about a stop to compensate for it.

What do you think?

Thanks

Assuming it isn't a dense yellow filter, i wouldn't really bother. The 2 yellow filters i've used have only taken 1/3rd to 1/2 a stop of light off and with an old camera like your Nettar you probably wont have the facility to be accurate to 1/3rd or 1/2 stops anyway

Excellent! Thanks for that.

Maybe I'm not as dumb as I look :D

Edit: Thanks Rob. Ok, so I'll maybe guess about half a stop - see what happens.

If you have a lightmeter handy, best bet would be to test the filter with it, see what difference it makes to the exposure

Heh yes Rob is probably right, that half stop or so will probably compensate for the dodgy old shutter mechanics which will probably be overexposing by that much anyway.

Or even test it with the meter on your D7000? It's all the same light after all!

But I would do it with centre weighted metering just to be sure as the yellow colour will likely screw up the 3d colour matrix metering and make it think its taking a picture of a sunset or something.

Have now spot metered a grey card using my D7000.

Turns out to be 2/3 of a stop.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Hmmm, I've never bothered with either of my cameras the folders far from accurate any way but i've never noticed any underexposure with the OM, maybe its tending to over expose by now any way...

I'm assuming the OM meters through the lens, so it compensates automatically?

Ah yeah excellent point. Got used to using the folder already!

How are you measuring the exposure... meter? Guess? If guess, then guess... if meter just stick the filter in front of it.

It's been a long time since I used these filters, but I never bothered adjusting for yellow. Orange and red, yes.
