How much should I expect to pay?

eBay take fees from postage now so no fees avoided

Steve
I didn't know that, thieving gits :D
Not that I sell on there, but I guess they finally cottoned on to buy it now for £1
and P&P was 20 quid :D

I was thinking about bidding on those reflectors but looked at the postage and decided not to.
When I bid for something I look at both the cost of the item and the postage and if the total is more than I am willing to pay I do not bid.

So would you pay for something
That obviously doesn't cost that much to send

Yes if the shipping fees were up front and obvious its the buyers mistake.

Yep. They first forced top rated sellers to offer 'free' post when everyone knows its not really free which meant there was fees to pay on all of the transaction and after a while to catch those that didn't offer free post they simply included fees for the whole transaction. To be fair we make a decent 2nd income from eBay but they are making it more difficult every month

How does anyone here know the postage was too much without knowing how much the seller spent on packaging, what the parcel dimensions were, what weight and what level of courier service and insurance was taken.

Until all of the above is known then words like "rip off merchant" are nothing but unfounded speculation.

Next time check the postage cost before bidding. If it were me I'd have had an auto non payment dispute going after 48 hours.

well he has a large tripod that only has £15 postage
how does that work

Think yourself lucky it wasn't Vistaprint

Just bought a small ink stamp, just under a fiver for economy delivery and can expect it on May 12th. Could have gone for the next dearest option at eight quid to get it on May 2nd. Premium service was the real bargain just under 16 nicker to get it in three days time, over twice the price of the ink stamp!!

Well I cancelled the transaction out of principle
they would not even accept £15 delivery

I can post 2kgs of goods to Australia for £25. Last week I shipped four broken laptops insured for £150 tracked signed for and next day delivery with ups for £12. £20 to ship 3 reflectors is a rip off

That's great but different couriers charge differently for different services.

This thread lacks facts to be pointing the finger.

I'd offer to collect them. If its only 60 miles. 120 round trip may cost less than 20 in fuel.

I checked collect plus website and there highest postage is only £9 and it much have been in there middle bracket so £6 ish
And I've seen sellers advertising world wide shipping and will put the world cost not actual cost

Explain how he can send a large tripod (4+kg) 64cm long and next day for only £15

The reflectors weigh little and just have an odd shape £20 for this is excessive

And for the seller to say it Costs £20 must be a lie

He will probably now re list for some one else to do the same as me

First thing I'm thinking is who orders a stamp from Vistaprint?

Sorry I always laugh at my own jokes

Someone who needs one , don't have an inkstamps r'us round here (big bank balance helps too judging by my recent experience)

What about fuel and time costs to get to the post office etc, surely the charge (upfront and clear) covers more than the "stamp" cost??? I think you are in the wrong breaking the contract, sorry.

All absolutely 100% irrelevant to the issue you had.

You bid on an item where postage to the zone you live in was listed at £20. You then disputed the cost of the postage after winning the auction. You cannot dispute the fact that you made the error here. On the positive side, I'm sure you will check more clearly in future and always take the wording at face value (ie assume nothing)

The sellers reasons for setting postage costs at £20 are their own, it is up to the buyer to decide if they wish to pay that much. A while back I went through a phase of selling stuff on ebay, but I'm too lazy to pack stuff up and take to the PO myself. So I would provide the goods and delivery addresses to someone else who would then deal with all that stuff for me - for a fee. That fee was included in my postage costs.

I'm sure P&P means postage and packaging

Not P&P&my time and fuel

I wouldn't charge extra for my time or fuel as you decided to sell

If you are getting rid of stuff like taking stuff to the tip you don't expect them to pay you
Same for giving your stuff to a charity shop you don't expect for them to pay for your fuel

Charging extra for time and fuel is not included in P&P

This is my opinion

I guess this thread can be closed now though

What more is there to say?
this statement is 100% correct and is the only relevant point, if you have an opinion outside of this statement then you are wrong. this is not an opinion but a Fact!

Possibly the seller is taking the pee, however postage costs are listed, so if you don't like it, don't bid! (Oh and it's done on volume and weight! - when calculating courier costs!!!)

If you don't agree with the postage costs, don't bid. No good whining about it afterwards when it was there for all to see. Seller did nothing wrong if everything was transparent and you just misread it.

I've bid on low priced items in the past where P&P has been higher than it could have been, but I accepted that price when I bid. If I didn't like the price, I wouldn't have bid.

On the other hand, I've sold items where the actual postage cost was less than the P&P charge. Some of that goes for packaging, some goes for the fact that my estimates aren't always identical to the actual cost when things are weighed and sent. In your example, should online retailers also only sell P&P at cost? As many of them charge the same P&P for a single small item as they do for multiple large items. Would you contact them after agreeing to buy an item telling them they had to discount your postage, because you decided they charge too much?

It's done on one or the other. If it's volumetric weight is higher, then it's done on cbm not kg, and that's not gonna happen for what he bought.
He should have read the ad....but the seller was taking the pee on postage costs.
