how much power for lastolite Hilite?

I am working out a studio set up and considering getting the stable imaging 3 head set up to start off with the intention of getting something like a twin head smartflash or elemental genesis later.

This might seem wasteful but my thinking is I could use the stable imaging units to light the hilite, and also for a snoot or kicker light where not too much power is required. If the stable imaging units can light the background on a low power setting, recycle times wont be an issue.

I am looking at the smaller hilite, so does it need 2 heads to light it and on what power setting?

Power's not a problem - they're quite efficient. I do it with two 580EX guns plus Stofens on quarter power.

Ricahrd, care to share what camera setting you are using with those 580EX.
ISO, Shutter, aperture?

I am looking at getting one of these for a mobile setup. also what size hilite do you have?

I don't actually have a HiLite, but I've used one and used to have a cheap copy, which wasn't very good, very uneven - long story, so get the Lastolite one. I just use white paper now, but will probably get a 6x7' Lastolite later in the year. They save a lot of space.

I was getting f/8 ISO200 no probs on quarter power (for fast recycle) with two 580EX guns plus Stofens - shutter speed makes no odds with flash. I like to shoot around f/5.6 for portraits so f/8 is more than enough for the HiLite. If you want f/16 for whatever reason (though I'm not sure why you should) things might be different - bump the ISO.

The genuine HiLite is very efficient - it's basically a sealed box so all the light is forced out of the front and the overall light area is actually quite small. Search for posts by Hodders - he's done a lot of testing.

cheers mate, I have access to 2 580exII and will be using them however if i can get away with a cheaper flash unit then i might look at that. Decision decisions. Will check out Hodders threads.

as long as you can over expose the hilite by around 3/4 to One stop over the main frontal lighting you will get good results without too much wraparound lighting, also keep subject min of around 3 feet away from background helps...

I have the stable imaging kit now and will be upgrading to a combination of Lencarta Elitepro & Safari lights later this month/early next month. I will be doing exactly what you are saying and sticking the stable imaging lights on the hilite! I will then sell one of them with a softbox/umbrella, stand and sync cable for someone as a starter kit....
