How much for a 2nd hand Canon 300mm f2.8?

Thanks for all the replies guys. The reason I asked is that someone has offered to buy mine off me because I simply dont use it and I had no idea what the resell value was.

I may just consider letting it go seeing as it has been used once in the last 3 months and I dont think motorsports or football is going to be my thing.

Thanks for all the advice!!

Looking at your Avatar,

I knew football wasn't your thing

Whilst we're talking about 300/2.8's, it seems that there may be a MkII version about to be launched in the next few months. If there's any truth in it then it might flush out a few MkI's onto the secondhand market.

Interesting, do you know if thats just the 300 or are they thinking the 400, 500 and 600 like Nikon did recently?

The rumour mill said 300 & 400 this year and 500 & 600 next year.

so if I do wanna sell mine then I need to do it now before the MKII comes out and the prices plummet!!

Hmmm......

haha I will let that one ride....

Nah the reason I say that football would never be my thing is because I actually go the match I wouldnt give up my season ticket to sit lower down in the ground, in the wet watching the game through a view finder! Enjoy my seat in the stands in the shelter with access to lager at half time ;)
Also couple that with the fact that it seems that getting into the clique of football would appear to be a difficult one.

Hmmm after Nikon bought out there new versions I guess it was only a matter of time before Canon did. Nice to see them investing some money in new optic designs but part of me would love them to have worked on something that could rival the 14-24 or 200-400.

... And if you think used 300mm f/2.8s are rare, try buying a used 500mm f/4. They're non-existent.
Actually Mike, I did do some research back in October when this all blew up and I wanted to establish what was a fair price.

UK sales on eBay in the previous month ... none.
Sales on TalkPhotography ... none.
UK sales on POTN ... none.
Sales on EOS Classifieds ... none.
Recent sales at ffordes ... none.
Recent sales at MPB ... none.

Seeing a used on on eBay is extremely rare. But thanks for the pointer - I'll be watching this one! (As no doubt will half the TP members.)

The 300 2.8 is a belter, can be hand held, and if they upgrade it I suspect it will be to improve the IS, to say 4 stops, which would be great, but I suspect it will be a fair bit more expensive, and I don't think a good 300 2.8 will drop a lot. Good luck in getting one. You won't be disappointed!!

Hi,

I missed 3 IS versions over the last few months ( 2 on EOS Classifieds and one on another Forum ), ranging from £1800 to £1900 and one had the Lenscoat too and all were Mint. However I am sure they would go for a bit more now with the recent price rises.

I wouldn't be paying more than £2000 - £2100 for one in mint condition even now, even camerapricebuster shows them brand new at £2837 and I know Ian Kerr can beat that.

Mike.

A mate of mine got his from Ian for £2450 but that was when the rate was good.

I'd be amazed if there wasn't a flurry of last minute bidding on this. He's pitched the starting price quite high, so I don't suppose people will want to drive the price upwards too soon.

EDIT

In fact hasn't he increased the starting bid price by a 100 quid from last time I looked?

That was the price I paid for mine about 6 months ago from Ian. He's probably charging very close to £3,000 right now :suspect::eek:

I recently inquired with ian (kerso) recently on 300 2.8, 400 2.8 and 600 4.0 prices (As i need some soon) and he wouldn't even quote prices just said he couldn't beat any current uk prices.

That's exactly what I'd have expected with the current exchange rate. Ian's done a great job in the past, but sadly with the £ at or below $1.5 he's fighting a losing battle.

Let's hope things start to improve for both him and us, although with the way our dear politicians are talking, I thing that's a forlorn hope for a bit at least.
I also think that if and when Canon upgrade lenses, there will be a substantial hike in prices.

LOL This guy is moving the goal posts all the while. He's now upped the starting bid price to £2,300, and added a 'Buy It Now' price of £,2599.

It's a bit early to be on the sauce, isn't it CT? ;)

This is the Canon 500mm we were looking at on eBay. Starting price £800, current bid £1131, no Buy-It-Now price. I don't know what you're looking at.

I'm not sure where you're getting "we" from Stewart - the clue is in the thread title. ;)

Tis this one to which I refer..

Oh, I see.

I thought "we" were talking about the 500, following this exchange, where I was referring to the 500 on eBay which Mikesphotaes had highlighted:

Have you seen WHE current price on them !! £5449

http://www.warehouseexpress.com/product/default.aspx?sku=12826

the 300 2.8, 400 2.8, 500 4.0, 600 4.0 and 800 5.6. Are all at insane prices now.

LOL. I know. I bought mine from Jessops of all places who were doing the best UK price at the time. I think they still are, but even they are currently selling the 500mm f4L at over 300 quid more than I paid. Actually, I just checked... 400 quid more.

One went recently on ebay for £500, admitedly it was tatty. It was in Spain, But the guy did receive it in the uk.

I currently have 7 EF lenses and if I bought them now from Warehouse Express at todays prices, they'd set me back a cool £12109.00!! I'd love to see Canon Bob's total on this! :D

What is the matter with WE though, they're not even remotely competitive these days! I've always found them great to deal with, but these current prices are nuts.

I have noticed that they arent too bad on some lenses, like the 17-40 L, they were £50 cheaper than Jessops last week but had no stock whatsoever so had to pay Jessops price in the end.

Pretty much all of their L glass is out of stock and they just tell you anticipated delivery February!!
