How much does (re)tiling cost?

Yes
I have an en-suite shower room. It's about 2.6m X 1.7m and has floor to ceiling tiles. The tiles are in great condition but a little dated. The design I have planned would work with the existing tiling but would look better with fewer, more modern tiles. So I wondered roughly how much would it cost to
  1. hack off tiles
  2. make good the walls (I'm guessing skim them over)
  3. retile or fit shower panels - is it the same surface prep for both?
In my head that's 4 - 5 days labour so I'm thinking c£1k. Does that seem about right?

Obviously tiles will cost more but I can figure those out an a per sq m.

Maybe put the job on MyBuilder and see what quotes you get?

Yeah I’d just get a few quotes and go from there.

You might not need to skim… if the tiles were done reasonably recently then they usually come off quite cleanly as the modern adhesives are more flexible. You (or the tiler) can then scrape the old adhesive off, or at least get it flat enough to retile over.

I'm just at the planning stage so don't really want people to quote in expectation of work.

Does the lead cost them money?

Sadly, they were fitted in the 1980s.

That sounds very low, depending on where you are. One way to go is to get a salesperson in from a company like Wickes to give you a price. You may even like their price and offer. We did and they did an adequate job.

I've used MyBuilder a few times. In my experience you'll get responses that may want to come and do their own measuring up otherwise all they can offer is a ballpark estimate. Responding on the site doesn't cost them I believe, although I guess they pay something if they get a job via that site. The Wickes idea is a good one though.

Trades round here are £250ish a day, labourers £150+ but that was pre-covid so may have gone up.

Does 4-5 days sound right?

What's the coverage (metres squared)? We had half of our bathroom done (other half was shower paneling) which was a tad over 8 square metres of floor to ceiling tiles (walls only). We purchased the tiles and the tiler charged £280 to remove the old and fit new.
Excel says its 27 metres due to the floor to ceiling bit. So £1k is roughly in line with yours.

Thing is, you will get so many different quotes! Its like asking how long is a piece of string.

Get some recommendations for good tilers, either from friends or family or from tile merchants...

The alternative is do it your self. I did my bathroom a loo, floor to ceiling putting in a new suspended ceiling, a few years ago, replaced all the white goods and the plumbing as it was imperial sizes rather than metric so was easier to start again. Even managed to get a palette of modern but slightly undersized 20x24cm tiles at under half price. Took the whole 3/4 palette that they had left, as I would not be able to match them later If I ran out. Had about 50 over at the end. so have enough to do alterations if I want to change things.
The old tiles came off easily enough, had them off in both rooms and prepared the surface in a day. The loo was not out of action more than an hour at a time though I had to totally replumb it in a slightly different position. Including a new feed through the wall from the airing cupboard with its own stopcock, which make life far easier.
Changed an ancient 1970's Green patterned tiled and avocado horror story, in to a modern white and light grey Italian style bathroom and loo. It still cost the best part of £1000+ for all new everything including new towel radiator and materials. and I got good discounts on almost everything. I would expect the same job using tradesmen to cost up to three times as much.

One problem was that the old bath was also imperial sized, to exactly fit between two walls. whilst the new one was metric which is slightly longer. So I had to chase out the wall at each end to fit the bath.

This is a 360x180 so looks rather odd as a thumbnail.

Ah, those will probably be more difficult to get off cleanly then. Although not as bad as my first house, where the original 1920s tiles had been set into a strong cement mix. I started off with a bolster and chisel but couldn’t shift them. It took a builder with a Kango to get them off and I ended up with bare brick walls in the bathroom.

taking off old tiles can be a nightmare and you end up down to the brick, especially as boogieman said they have been done in sand/cement...i know this through experience...luckily me brother is a time served tiler so the hard work for me consisted of putting the kettle on now and again, good tilers cost lots, but you are paying for experience, the hard bit of tiling is the prep work so the walls are flat and setting out so you dont end up with big cuts down one end and slithers down the other...good luck
